One of the most dangerous aspects of prescription drug abuse is the fact that each prescription that a doctor writes is tailored specifically for that person.  When people steal drugs that werent prescribed to them they take a huge risk, for example not knowing if the drugs are a larger dose that was meant for a large person.  If someone smaller took these pills they could easily overdose.

Even over the counter drugs are commonly abused. Dextromethorphan is one of these drugs.  It is found in many cough medicines and at high doses can cause effects that are similar to the notorious street drugs PCP and ketamine.  Another over the counter drug that can be wrongfully used is ephedrine or pseudoephedrine.  These drugs are a necessary ingredient in the illicit manufacture of methamphetamines.

What are some affects of abusing prescription drugs?  Stimulants can cause paranoia and irregular heartbeat. Opiate use can cause drowsiness, nausea, and slowed breathing. Depressant use can cause slurred speech, shallow breathing, and seizures.  All of these classes of drugs can easily be the cause of overdose causing death

What is the difference between taking needed medications and abusing drugs? Abusers either do not have a prescription for the drug or lie to their doctors and say that they need the drugs when they really don't. Also abusers use the drugs solely to get the high that the drugs provide.

As technology advances, some computers are turning out to be better than humans at their job.  This is worrisome for pharmacists all around the country. Huge medicine dispensing robots are growing more and more popular due to their efficiency and have the potential to put a pharmacist out of work.

The most common way that people illegally obtain prescription drugs is that they take them from family and friends.  This can be prevented by counting the number of pills that are left in a bottle and disposing of the unused medications properly to ensure that no one has a chance to take them.

Although prescription drug abusers think that their drug isnt as harmful as the notorious street drugs such as heroin and cocaine, this can easily be dismissed as false.  Opioid prescriptions are extremely similar to heroin and the commonly abused stimulants imitate the effects produced by cocaine.
