New method to restore skull after brain surgery appears to reduce complication rates

Johns Hopkins surgeons report they have devised a better, safer method to replace bone removed from the skull after lifesaving brain surgery. The new technique, they say, appears to result in fewer complications than standard restoration, which has changed little since its development in the 1890s.

Everyone has been taught for 120 years to completely peel up the scalp,” says study leader Chad R. Gordon, D.O. In the new approach, surgeons pull back only the top three layers of the five-layer scalp, thereby sandwiching the bone or implant in between. The researchers say this innovation not only prevents brain injury, but also reduces infection risk by providing the delicate bone or implant access to blood supply in the scalp from both the top and the bottom. “But by not disturbing the brain, we get much better outcomes. This is a safer, simpler way to do a very complex surgery.”

Ideally, surgeons restore the skull with the same piece of bone removed during the original operation, which is stored in a freezer between operations. In some cases, surgeons must substitute the original bone with a custom-made implant made of an organic compound called methyl methacrylate, which has been used safely since the 1960s

Alexis Gdovic's comment, March 27, 2014 8:02 AM
Surgeons from John Hopkins have come up with a new way of replacing bone in the skull after having brain surgery. It is more successful and less risky than before. Where before, the patient would need to get 2 surgeries because of scarring and faulty protective coverings, now they only need 1 operation. "Traditionally, surgeons have peeled the scalp off the brain to then tuck the skull bone or custom implant back into place, a practice which puts the patient at risk of bleeding, seizure, stroke and infection. In some cases, the replaced bone or implant must again be removed." Now, they simply peel back only 3 of the 5 layers of the scalp.
Alexis Gdovic's comment, March 27, 2014 8:06 AM
This new method reduces risk of infection, as well as preventing a higher injury. It is "safer" and easier. Though when experimenting through 50 patients, only 1 had a cranial issue, which caused them to preform a second surgery anyway although it still limited the amount of blood lost.

The heath system has come up with a new way of preforming knee surgery, which will ensure effectivity and accuracy. This will reduce mechanical errors involved as well as make the patient more comfortable with the implant and make it more "natural-feeling." While a variety of large annoying things is required during current knee surgery, the new aid is only 2 inches wide and will be the only thing needed throughout the entire surgery.

A new method of fat-reducing has become easier and less risky, called cryolipolysis, which is simply freezing fat cells through your skin. The skin, however, is only temporarily affected. While the area of the skin is only sensitive for a few weeks at most, it will take a few months to see results. This new method can be fully preformed in 1 or 2 hours. Many lose at least 20% of the fat they already had and it will not return, as the body will dispose of it "as easy as it is to urinate."

Cosmetic surgery is not only common for Koreans, but it has become a part of their culture. Though they believe it is "your body, your choice," the popularity of cosmetic surgery is becoming more and more ridiculous. It was obvious during a Miss Korea pageant that all the contestants looked as if they were the same, being that they have all had similar procedures on their faces. All had "big doll eyes, and heart shaped chins."
Alexis Gdovic's comment, March 28, 2014 8:05 AM
Many believe that by cosmetic procedures they can go from the "ugly duckling" into a beautiful "swan." The author of this article says that statement is "misleading." Many women in Korea get these surgeries in order to find a husband.
Alexis Gdovic's comment, March 28, 2014 8:09 AM
Often, girls will undergo surgeries before their freshman year of college, because they know that if they got it in high school, everyone would notice the drastic changes. Sometimes even their families will put them under the impression that they aren't attractive until they undergo surgery. They claim that the missing trait is inner beauty. The author says "why change what is not broken?"

Doctors claim that simply taking pictures of yourself on a cell phone can cause you to want cosmetic surgery. They have also said "Individuals see how they look in their selfie and want it fixed with plastic surgery." Because cell phones can distort the image, what you see in a "selfie" is not actually the way you look in person, doctors will show these people the real way they look. When people post pictures of themselves on social media it is usually to make them feel better about themselves typically by people commenting on that photo and basically "liking" it. A doctor says: "Selfies provide a great way to get that immediate reassurance and approval at least for that hour."

Though it is usually a great achievement to be attractive, some women feel the need to dress ugly and homeless-like when they are out in public or are walking home alone. It is common to be harassed, stared at, and sometimes even raped or stolen simply because of one's good looks. Many believe it is very sad that women must suffer through this. They go to many extremes in order to not appeal to the opposite sex.

What people consider good looking is very different than it used to be. while before there were strange methods into looking beautiful, now the methods seem simple. Smaller "detailed help" and nice skin can go a long way. "Detailed" meaning makeup and doing something with your hair. It is common to color your hair currently, however if people in the past heard some of the odd things we do to be thought of as attractive, they would think we were weird as well.

"70% of women rate their body shape as larger than ideal". It is believed that the reason for this dissatisfaction is that media (the fashion industry to be specific). While women tend to worry about being overweight, men wish to be heavier.
Alexis Gdovic's comment, March 7, 2014 7:53 AM
Many considerations of attractive for women consider being thin, hence the reason for desiring to be unnaturally skinny. Back in the 1940's, if you were thin you were thought of as very nervous and unsocial. By the 80's however, being very thin became something that many people wished for.
Alexis Gdovic's comment, March 7, 2014 7:54 AM
Because of this desired body shape, it is very common for women to be unhappy with their size. "Females are more likely to judge themselves overweight than males." These new thin models have caused eating disorders as well as a significant number of diets in young women.

Many patients receiving plastic surgery consider Botox as a "gateway drug." One woman who has received countless numbers of dermals fillers, etc. says about the way she looks: "It all depends on the time of day, the angle I'm viewed from, the amount of salt I've consumed, what I'm wearing, the weather, and if I've had my hair professionally styled." She also said that the time you feel and look the best is right after you have gotten surgery because your face is still swollen. The common claim is "by erasing one issue, you create another." She has erased her under-eye bags, but had also caused her eyes to look much smaller than they were before.

Continuing the "porcelain face" era, the 1800's brought about more odd potions to whiten the face. They began to drink the vinegar, chalk, and the element arsenic. It gave a "transparent" look to the skin. In order to make their eyes look dewy, they put the compound antimony sulfide in their eyes. "They dried the tear ducts and destroyed their vision." Before this, they used belladonna to dilate pupils, giving themselves glaucoma.
Alexis Gdovic's comment, March 5, 2014 7:57 AM
In the mid 1800's, it was in style to have curves. By using different items of clothing under their real clothes, they created the illusion of curves if they didn't have any. When the 1950's came around, women put silicone and their own adipose cells into different parts of their bodies to get the full effect. These procedures, although still extremely common now, are dangerous.
Alexis Gdovic's comment, March 5, 2014 8:05 AM
In Africa, it was attractive to have a cone shaped head, so when girl infants were borned, they wrapped the head in giraffe hide to achieve this odd shape. They also put "plates in their lips" and used heavy earrings to weigh down their lobes. Female beauty has also been defined as having a 15 inch neck to the Padung people. This still continues in northern Thailand today. "Over the years women are known to drink urine for its beautifying properties. Others drink pigeon's blood for the same reasons. Some have ingested tape worms to lose weight. All of these procedures have potential health consequences." Corsets have also played a large factor of fashion for a very long time. Since lately it has been desired to have a very small waist, corsets have been common. Today the strange body achievements have continued through plastic surgeries, broken ribs, etc.
