One of the cleanest fossil fuel power plants in the U.S. The Lodi Energy Center is a highly flexible combined-cycle power plant that has been operating for more than six months. The 300-megawatt facility  has an efficiency of more than 57%. The plant's fast run-up time enables it to feed 200 megawatts of electric power into the grid after just 30 minutes. Which makes it perfect for balancing out energy production fluctuations at wind farms and solar power stations.


State-of-the-art power plant technology from Siemens is supporting the upcoming energy transition in the U.S. The administration plans need to meet 25% of the country's electricity requirement with energy from renewable sources by 2025. Combined-cycle plants are beneficial here in two ways. First , they can offset the electricity output at power plants that use renewable energy sources, and secondly, replacing older coal-fired plants with highly efficient combined-cycle facilities  reduces CO2 emissions. 


 In El Segundo, California, and Panda Temple and Panda Sherman in Texas, siemens has received orders from three additional Flex-Plant power stations in the U.S. Cutting-edge combined-cycle power plants are part of the Siemens environmental portfolio, with which the company generated about €33 billion in sales in fiscal year 2012.

Tucson Electric Power (TEP) has received an international award for predictive maintenance at the Springerville Generating Station (SGS). TEP received the Emerson Process Experts 2013 Reliability Program of the Year award for the use of effective reliability and maintenance practices that saved the utility more than $1.4 million in 2012 alone,

In 2013 the TEP received the Emerson Process Experts 2013 Reliability Program of the Year award for the use of effective reliability and maintenance practices that saved the utility more than $1.4 million in 2012 alone, using technology to monitor and identify equipment in need of repair or replacement.


Equipment such as vibration analysis, infrared thermography, oil analysis and electrical motor testing and specialized tools  are used to predict when bearings or other parts in motors, fans and pumps will go bad so the parts can be replaced or fixed before the equipment fails.



TEP began installation of a wireless vibration system throughout the plant's coal handling facilities in 2013, which automatically collects vibration data and sends it to system supervisors for analysis. For example, as gears wears down, vibration increases and  a change that can be detected with the vibration system. The system is expected to be among the largest wireless vibration networks of any power plant in the world and among the top five largest of any industry in the world, once fully installed.
