The development of contact lenses originates to the early 1500s. Leonardo da Vinci was the first to notice optical defects of the cornea. He did many experiments, including putting a mans head into a clear bowl filled with water. The man could see clearly through the bowl.

Eyeglasses didn't start to become fashionable to wear until about the 1920's. Before then, anyone wearing glasses would be perceived as being weak. The 1950's saw the emergence of more stylist frames such as ray bans and cat eye frames.

Optometry can be traced back to ancient Greece. In the year 1801, Thomas Young had mapped humans normal vision field. In 1856, the Handbook of Physiological Optics was published.

The first invented vision aid was a glass ball called a reading stone, which magnified text for easier reading, created around 1000 AD. The first pair of wearable eyeglasses was created by Salvino D'Armate in 1284. The first pair of sunglass like eyeglasses was created around 1752, and wasn't to protect the eyes from the sun, but to correct problems with vision.

Optometry originates to about 2000 years ago. David A. Goss discovered a writing dating back to 13th century Italy that mentions the creation of eyeglass. Astigmatism was first discovered in 1801 by Thomas Young. In 1827, astigmatism corrective lenses were first created by George Airy.

The manufacture of lenses started around the year 1300. By the 1600's, the formal conditions of the the aye started to become recognized. In the year 1623, the book, The Use of Eyeglasses was first published.

The first pair of eyeglasses originate from Pisa, Italy around the year 1286. They were convex shaped lenses and were connected in the center with a rivet.

In ancient Rome, to watch the fighting gladiators, Nero looked through an Emerald. This may or may not be due to it's magnification. The first representation of eyeglasses was in 1352 when Tommaso da Modena painted the painting containing a man using them to read.

In 1527, the concept of contact lenses is first illustrated by the great Leonardo Da Vinci. Later, in 1887, the first basic contact lenses were created. They were composed of glass and made to cover the whole eye. Around the 1940's, further advancements were made to change the material to plastic and to shrink them down to go directly in the eye. The 1970's showed the world two new advancements in contact lenses, soft and gas permeable lenses. The next few years showed the creation of disposable lenses and daily disposable contact lenses.

In 1263, lenses being of use to people with bad vision is first written by Roger Bacon. In 1604, Johannes Kepler describes the concave and convex lenses can help correct vision problems. In 1784, Benjamin Franklin invents bifocal lenses. In 1798, color blindness was first discovered. In 1851, the ophthalmoscope was invented.
