The Pennsylvania State Police was created by an Act of the legislature which was signed into law by Governor Samuel W. Pennypacker on May 2, 1905. It was the first uniformed police organization of its kind in the United States. Today, the authorized complement of the Pennsylvania State Police is 4,545 sworn members. In addition, over 1,600 civilians serve in a variety of roles throughout the Department.

On September 12, in 1978 the State Police built a new building that would separate them from using other state agencies. Trooper from the air in 1978 were able to clock motorist speed with a stopwatch. The State Policeman was issued a new side arm called the .357 magnum this was "The first improvement in the weapons State Policeman had in 75 years".

In 1986 the first Member Assistances Program Completed their training. in 1987 the Liquor laws were give to the State Police. In the July of 1988 State Police designed a new shoulder and shirt patch

In 1989 800 State Troopers were called to the Camp Hill Prison to stop a uprising of prisoners in the jail. In the 1990 Gov. Robert P. Casey picked out 80 Troopers for a new tactical team. In 1992 the State Police opened the very first DNA testing site in Greensburg, Pa for the State Police.

On July 19, 1919 the State Police built a new base in Lancaster, Pa called Troop E. In 1920 the Superintendent created the Bureau of Criminal Identification. In 1923 the Highway Patrolmen was established to control the growth of highways and cars in Pennsylvania

In 1924 the first motorists examination for driver license was given. The Superintendent moved the Highway training base from Heresy, Pa to Harrisburg, Pa. The first Highway Patrolmen was killed in 1927 .

Troop F was established in 1935, this base was the last one to be built. In 1946 the State Police got their hands on the State Wide Radio Telephone System. In March of 1960 the new Training Academy for State Police was established in Hersey, Pa.

Governor Samuel W. Pennypacker signed a bill that would establish the Department of Sate Police in 1905. One of the first Sate Police headquarters was stationed in Greensburg , PA. Pennsylvania state police training center is on CoCoa Ave Hersey, Pa.
