Stop Burning Rain Forests for Palm Oil: Scientific American

Stop Burning Rain Forests for Palm Oil: Scientific American | Asian Geothermal | Scoop.it

December 7, 2012 - Scientific American

The world's growing appetite for cheap palm oil is destroying rain forests and amplifying climate change...

Palm oil exports bring Indonesia and neighboring Malaysia $40 billion a year.Yet this profit comes at a terrible toll. Converting forests into oil palm plantations destroys the home of not only orangutans but also such critically endangered creatures as the Sumatran tiger and the Sumatran rhino.

Moreover, the denuding of this land through logging and burning releases large quantities of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide. Much of this forest sits on peatland, the draining and burning of which releases even more carbon dioxide than the clearing of the overlying trees does....  http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=stop-burning-rain-forests-for-palm-oil

One more reason to hope Jero Wacik is serious about finally unlocking some of the country's clean energy potential during his time as Energy Minister.

Interesting article; very revealing to stack up the number of female leaders in Asia against the female leaders in the US and Europe. Of course, as the article points out, there are underlying these numbers a few factors that curb my feminist optimism.

Relevant for renewable? Yes, because several of the most important people in the geothermal industry in Indonesia are female, like PGE vet Dr. Nenny Miryani Saptadji, or the CEO of the Indonesia Infrastructure Guarantee Fund Sinthya Roesly. Meanwhile the Philippines' ministries and utilities have even healthier gender ratios.

How about an energy debate, green warts and all? | Asian Geothermal | Scoop.it
There is a massive contradiction between Australians' eagerness for a green economy and their obsession over cost of living pressures. Knowing this, politicians are withholding the full picture.
Jonathan Geothermal's insight:

Keith Orchison brings up the old chestnut about just how many roofs you would need to cover with solar panels to power a country. I saw a speech by the Singaporean PM Lee Hsien Loong in 2011 where he said the same.

I feel like we don't really want to read this particular objection to renewable any more? Solar can never be your baseload. It can only ever be complementary. You need it, of course - but you also need geothermal, and wind, and for a while probably a few gas turbines and maybe a nuclear plant. That is why people talk of an energy mix - and the protestations of politicians and others that solar isn't viable only takes up valuable discussion time that could be spent on unpacking the real issues - a couple of which Orchison does mention here, as do his fervent commenters.

Environment issues hitting the economy

Worsening air pollution in many Asian cities - Beijing's chronically bad air quality is a case in point - is a daily reminder of the high environmental cost of the region's pattern of growth.
Jonathan Geothermal's insight:

With Singapore's haze crisis still fresh across the wires and social media, it might be easy to forget that major Chinese cities like Beijing are often afflicted with smog that's just as unhealthy. As the far east tries to take the edge of the pollution created by its rapid growth, the PRC is well placed as an Asian leader in renewables.

Is China actually doing more to tackle climate change than UK? | Greenpeace UK | Asian Geothermal | Scoop.it
China will spend 0.71% GDP per year on renewables, whilst the UK figure is 0.68%. And remember the UK figure includes grid upgrades and (at time of calculation) nuclear power.
Jonathan Geothermal's insight:

The effort is certainly being made in the PRC when it comes to mitigating carbon emissions.

However as one commenter hints at, a real comparison also probably needs to look at the sort of emissions both countries are culpable for, and a contrast of how many coal plants they have both recently built. The issue goes a lot deeper than what each economy spends on renewables - after all to power its growth and provide basic energy for its people the PRC needs more of everything, and is accordingly building quite a few of everything!

What the UK can learn from is China's eagerness to develop cleaner energy systems and perhaps its entrepeneurial renewables environment. For every random email I get from Beijing or Shanghai trying to sell me solar panels or batteries, there must be some pretty good private business going on, right?

Jonathan Geothermal's insight:

'The environment minister, Zhou Shengxian, told People’s Daily, the Communist Party mouthpiece, that “China’s air quality is grim, and the amount of pollution emissions far exceeds the environment’s capacity.”'

The frightening wages of China's headlong growth are pollution and health hazards.

To keep the lights on coal plants have been described as necessary, but to ensure its people prosperity and long life the country will need to ease its dependence on dirty fuels. It is difficult to envision a near-term scenario in which the PRC is largely dependent on renewable energies, but it is certainly something the country should work towards - large-scale nuclear and geothermal to begin with while phasing out coal plants with cleaner combined cycle gas turbines while laying the groundwork for even more wind and solar farms... if only!

Black waves of oil washing onto Thai resort beach three days after oil leak

Black waves of oil washing onto Thai resort beach three days after oil leak | Asian Geothermal | Scoop.it
BANGKOK (AP) - Workers used buckets to scoop up globs of crude oil blackening the once white sands and emerald waters of a tourist island in Thailand's eastern sea on Tuesday, three days after the oil leaked from a nearby pipeline.
Jonathan Geothermal's insight:

Terrible news for tourism. You can step in a splat of crude on Singapore's East Coast Park as well if you aren't careful. Important to remember with all this furor over geothermal quakes, they aren't as disruptive or unpleasant as a wave of viscous atrament washing up on the beach.

(Singapore and Thailand of course aren't such great locations for geothermal plants, but that news piece just made me compare the side effects of different energy types again.)

Green Energy Hit by Cheap Fuel - Jakarta Globe

Green Energy Hit by Cheap Fuel - Jakarta Globe | Asian Geothermal | Scoop.it
Green Energy Hit by Cheap Fuel Jakarta Globe Jero Wacik, the minister for energy and mineral resources, has blamed the public's reliance on subsidized fuel for the lack of development of Indonesia's alternative energy potential, saying he envisions...
Jonathan Geothermal's insight:

"Jero said on Wednesday that Indonesia had huge potential for developing renewable energy sources, including geothermal, solar, hydro, biomass and tidal energy."

Aside from stating the obvious Bp. Jero did manage to tackle some of the thorny issues entangling the development of renewable energy - over-reliance on subsidies chief among them. If he wants to get away from a subsidy-based energy market and make renewables more attractive, in the meantime finally fulfilling the dreams of investors and the echoing promises of several ministers before him alike, then he will have to take a hit on his popularity. The cantik dan besar fountain in Jakarta Sentral is always a popular place for a protest, after all.

FOCUS | Renewable energy can help meet Asia's energy challenge: But why are we stuck?

FOCUS | Renewable energy can help meet Asia's energy challenge: But why are we stuck? | Asian Geothermal | Scoop.it
A report by WWF International in collaboration with the World Resources Institute says a suite of good policies and practices must be considered to ensure that renewables can thrive and that set targets can be met.
Jonathan Geothermal's insight:

Some aggressive renewable energy targets:

China: 20 percent renewable energy by 2015
India: 17 percent by 2017
Philippines: 40 percent by 2020

What this article brings out quite well is some of the advantages Asian countries have in their quest to increase the share of renewables in their energy mixes. While many journos will commiserate pricing, governments digging their heels in and tricky policy, these guys quite rightly point out China's edge in manufacturing, the very open energy market in the Philippines and India's competitive bidding system. I would add to this the extremely cooperative and accommodating nature of local partners in Indonesia and the IPP -friendly, renewables-hungry environment of Thailand.
