The Ashoka Community's insight:

Fundamentally changing the norms of any industry can be a daunting task, especially when businesses now face entrenched social problems – like the health of our environment. The business shifts necessary to survive sometimes seem impossible. To solve these problems, we’re seeing ground-breaking collaborations emerge – demonstrating what is possible when an industry joins together for collaborative impact.

NEW FELLOW: Claudia Li, Shark Truth

NEW FELLOW: Claudia Li, Shark Truth | Ashoka Canada | Scoop.it

We are excited to welcome Claudia into the Ashoka family! Vancouver-based Claudia Li is recognized for innovations enabling ethnic Chinese youth in Canada to influence the global dialogue on environmental sustainability. Claudia Li is the founder of Shark Truth, which focuses on the issue of shark fin consumption. Li, a member of the Canadian-Chinese community, works to reframe the entire issue, bringing to light contradictions between traditional Chinese values and modern-day cultural practices. Through Shark Truth, Li juxtaposes shark fin soup with the traditional values of zero waste food consumption as a topic that introduces members of the ethnic Chinese community into a larger dialogue about conservation and sustainable eating. Since Shark Truth’s launch in 2009, the consumption of over 80,000 bowls of shark fin soup has been stopped — translating to over 8,000 sharks saved.

The Ashoka Community's insight:

"I'm honoured to be named an Ashoka Fellow and be a part of this network. Having support from one of the leading authorities on social change strengthens my work in building bridges across my communities to honour our cultural heritage as well as protect the planet.” - Claudia Li

INSIGHT: What is Education For?

What is education for? In Part 3 of our Globe and Mail series, Quest University's David Helfand argues for a radical re-thinking of university education and explains why the current approach of knowledge transfer is no longer good enough.

The Ashoka Community's insight:

This decade will usher in some of the most profound changes in education. Technology is fueling much of the innovation. But so are new global realities: rapid change, globalization, and daunting wicked problems. New schools, new tools, and new fields of study are challenging our centuries old institutions. Evolving them, if that's even possible, may not be enough. Many say a revolution is in order. Follow our special series re-examining the purpose of education, as we invite innovators working in Canada to share their personal vision and describe how their core beliefs are driving change inside and outside our systems.

Changemaker Badge

Changemaker Badge | Ashoka Canada | Scoop.it

On March 19, 2014, we hosted a Changemaker Showcase at the University of Sherbrooke and in front of the Mayor of Sherbrooke as well as the President of the university, we presented students with our first changemaker badge. (See video.) We awarded the Crowdfunder badge to students who took part in our Changemaker Challenge and succeeded in raising at least $2,000 for their social change projects (and leveraging our matching fund). The digital badge, part of Mozilla's Open Badges initiative, recognizes their ability to mobilize personal networks to crowdfund for social change.

The Ashoka Community's insight:

Expect to see more badges this year from us and our partners. If you have students who wish to crowdfund for their changemaking initiatives or wish to, please connect them to us. We would be happy to support them. Subscribe to our YouTube channel so you can see our new videos.
