iPad Revolution In Special Education | ASD in the Classroom | Scoop.it

Many schools have been surprised by the results that the iPad has brought these children, so much so, that they are planning pilot programs for all of their students, not just those with special needs. The tablet is a great tool for students with autism and various communication disorders because they are able to use different apps to communicate their needs and interact with others.

TherAd for Autism for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on the iTunes App Store

TherAd for Autism for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on the iTunes App Store | ASD in the Classroom | Scoop.it

Therapeutic Advertisements for Autism: Ther-ad for Autism is an evidence based video self modeling application for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. Numerous research studies have shown that video self modeling can help children with Autism to increase desired behaviors and consequently decrease problem behaviors at the same time.

Ther-ad for Autism allows a student to watch "motivating" media (movies) that are occasionally paused by Ther-ad at an interval that the parent or teacher sets. A short video self modeling clip is then presented to the student who then watches the short clip of themselves engaging in some behavior that the parent or teacher wishes to encourage. After the video self modeling clip finishes, the student is automatically reinforced by being returned to the motivating content.

Video content (both motivating and modeling) must be loaded by the user because each student is different in terms of what video content is motivating and of course each student will need their own self modeling content.

Ther-ad for Autism supports multiple clients with separate media libraries for each client, fully customizable modeling clip scheduling and data export for analysis of video modeling exposure for data based decision making.

Ther-Ad for Autism includes a free copy of the Durian Open Movie project, "Sintel". For more information about this film, visit http://www.sintel.org.

Timothy Tran can't wait for Monday, the first day at the new Lake Minneola School, where he'll be among 1,250 students using an iPad loaded with digital textbooks and applications for his biology, chemistry and geometry classes.

It's good-bye to carrying a backpack filled with heavy books.

"It's going to be easier and simpler," said the freshman. "It's going to make it more interesting and fun."
