I chose this scoop as it shows just how easy it is to manipulate OHS data and share it with a wide audience over social media.

It also raised awareness for myself to be mindful of information bias, to think critically and ensure that the information is from a valid source.

NGO Shipbreaking Platform: Press release – European Shipowners dumped 365 Toxic Ships on South Asian Beaches Last Year

Samantha Groen's curator insight, March 18, 2015 3:01 PM

According to this article approximately 365 ships containing toxic materials were taken to a ship breaking location. It also states that the EU parliament will be working on a solution or fix to help properly get rid of the toxic waste. The article is claiming to raise awareness however I would like to take this in a different place.

Over 300 ships were sent to be broken down by European ship owners just on their own. The focus is mainly spent on the sites where the workers are. The target for most of the issue is the land sites themselves and the owners. The conditions are horrible and the workers are suffering, however, the focus on the countries adding ships to be wasted is not as commonly shared. It isn't just the sites themselves, people are sending ships there to be wasted and that should receive a great deal of media as well. The ships being sent with toxic materials should have been cleansed in the least. ( I am not saying it would make it okay but I am just trying to point our the negligence of the people sending the ships not just those who are receiving and dismantling.
