Linda Reinstein's curator insight, May 2, 2013 8:50 AM

"We are pleased to hereby deliver the "Toolkit for the Elimination of Asbestos-Related Diseases". This toolkit has been developed to serve as a concise and easy-to-use refer-ence source of knowledge, technologies and information that merit attention for the purpose of eliminating asbestos-related diseases (ARDs). As such, the traditional public health approach, i.e., to address the three levels of prevention, was considered to be the basic means to tackle ARDs. Today it is a sad reality that many countries, especially those which are rapidly developing, continue to use asbestos at alarming levels. The developing countries in Asia are at the forefront of this trait, so we intended the admin-istrators, practitioners and researchers therein to be the primary beneficiaries. But our hope is that any party with concern on ARDs can have something to benefit from this toolkit. Whoever the party, a core principle to bear in mind, while referencing this toolkit, is that the most effective means to prevent ARDs is to stop using asbestos."

On behalf of all Contributors and the Secretariat,

Ken Takahashi, MD, PhD, MPH
Professor and Chair of Environmental Epidemiology, IIES
Director of the International Center,
University of Occupational and Environmental Health, Japan

The development of this Toolkit has been supported by the Rotterdam Convention Secretariat, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Labour Office (ILO).

Editorial from Australia: Asbestos: “The word that should strike fear into our hearts”

Editorial from Australia: Asbestos: “The word that should strike fear into our hearts” | asbestos | Scoop.it
Some words strike fear into your heart but some others don’t. Despite it being almost impossible to be killed in this country by either sharks or terrorists, most people pay attention as soon as those words are mentioned.
Sinem Delal Kankotan's insight:

The death penalty should not apply just for going to work and doing your job; nor should you get a terminal disease for lifting up your carpet or renovating your house. But, it is so and unless we learn the lessons of the past, many more people will also die from exposure to asbestos, and there are things that you can do to protect yourself.
