Double boost for UK's economy
The Week UK
BRITAIN'S BELEAGUERED economy got a double boost last month, according to new figures from the retail and manufacturing sectors.
George Panayiotou's insight:

This could create a state of falshe economic euphoria. UK is still dependent on a consumer led growth. This growth is highly vulnerable and dependent to US growth figures as well as the EU's ability and willingness to tackle the eurozone crisis. We can not view UK growth in isolation from the EU economic affairs and the economic developments of the far east.

Retirement Will Kill You

Retirement Will Kill You | AS Macroeconomics UK economy | Scoop.it
Teddy Roosevelt once said “the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.” Recent research suggests he may have been more right than he knew: Life’s “best prize” might actually...
George Panayiotou's insight:

Recent research suggests correlation between self-assessed health and work. This article invites us to have a discussion/debate on the positive social and health benefits of work and the potential "harmful" effects of retirement.

This study fails to focus on the importance of other variables. Freud stressed the importance of "love" and "work". The authors failed to bring in the "love" parameter in their research. It is not work itself but the type of work and the self fulfilment we get from it. The value we add in the end product of our working day.  There is strong evidence to suggest that mismatch of labour could be an even more important cause for depression and deterioration of self assessed health not retirement.

On a similar line Bernard Russell praised "idleness" and the positive effects it can have on our spiritual development. Perhaps is not retirement in itself but the way we utilise our time that makes the difference?

Is the UK Still a Crisis Economy Mr. Carney?
Wall Street Journal (blog)
Back in April he called the U.K. a crisis economy, along with those of the euro zone and Japan.
George Panayiotou's insight:

Useful insight on facts and figures for the UK Economy. The main question to ask is if Carney will drop the inflation target and set nominal growth as the target for the BoE. Allowing inflation to creep up in times of persistant austerity and lack of growth can be a reasonable monetary policy.
