felines are superior's insight:

Gabriel is an aspie girl dealing with horrible parents and an intolerant society, Rick is a neurotypical cop's son who thinks he's tough and knows all, untill he runs into a bunch of outer space aliens hiding in the hills surrounding Wired, a fictional California town.

The aliens have expressionless eyes and a dull voice, so you can't tell what they're feeling. They also have complex and strict social codes.

Sad and funny at the same time. Worth a read. Click on the link.

Chances are if you invited me or my kid to a party, I’ve declined your invitation. It’s not that we don’t like parties, cake or good company, it’s just that parties are hard – especially holiday parties. My son, Norrin, has autism and parties are sensory overload for him.

Oftentimes, people with autism have differences in social interaction and communication, as well as differences in cognitive functioning and processing sensory information. A person with ASD may have difficulty interpreting the meaning of facial expressions, for example, or she may be nonverbal. And when she doesn’t understand you, or doesn’t feel like you understand her, sometimes her behavior can reflect her feelings.

Study shows autistic brains create more information at rest

Study shows autistic brains create more information at rest | asperger syndrome | Scoop.it

New research finds that the brains of autistic children generate more information at rest – a 42% increase on average. The study offers a scientific explanation for the most typical characteristic of autism – withdrawal into one's own inner world. The excess production of information may explain a child's detachment from their environment.

You often see stories taking you further into the life of the child with special needs or the child’s parents, but what about the siblings? Having a child with autism or Asperger syndrome can require more attention, but siblings often face their own struggles that are sometimes overshadowed.

Heather Ash's curator insight, March 1, 2014 12:19 AM

Fascinating information. The music program creator has seen amazing results in children with disabilities and has seen a connection between music and improved academic performance. The power of music has been studied for years. There are areas of the brain that are profoundly connected to and resonate with music. Autistic children in the program are able to excel at learning a musical instrument despite their disability. Not only that, but participating in music has helped them improve in other cognitive abilities. What is great about Yu, the woman who started the music therapy class, is that she strongly believes in treating everyone in her class the same and in rebuilding their self-esteem too. I loved one particular quote from her, “Remember, there is only one spot inside your child’s brain that has gone wrong. The rest of it is absolutely fine,” she says. “Things will change if you do not give up.” It is important for parents, counselors, and teachers to remember that individuals with autism can still accomplish and learn many things.
