INTERNET TOPOGRAPHY by art of failure (Nicolas Maigret & Nicolas Montgermont)

In INTERNET TOPOGRAPHY, silent audio signals are sent from the exhibition space to Tokyo, then returned within the installation space where we can listen to it. The transmission errors that occur during these streamings are analyzed and then considered as a potential and incomplete layout of the network topography. Similar to a landscape, this digital topography proves to be an unstable organization of patterns, shapes and outlines opening the way to multiple mental representations. This imaginary scope is made perceptible trough an immersive sound and light installation.

Artist Profile: Heather Phillipson by Lindsay Howard on Rhizome | Digital MediaArts Numériques | Scoop.it

The latest in a series of interviews with artists who have a significant body of work that makes use of or responds to network culture and digital technologies.

When I saw your recent solo exhibition, immediately and for a short time balloons weapons too-tight clothing worries of all kinds, at Bunker259, I curled up in an inflatable birthing pool to watch a video suspended from an engine hoist. The video depicted a series of domestic, public, and online spaces, with a voiceover from you. At one point, you leaned over the camera and appeared to give me a facial. I broke down in laughter because it suddenly became clear that I had become a participant. When you show Zero-Point Garbage Matte, you use a similar strategy: the viewer climbs up a ladder and looks down on the monitor to view the video, a position that is reflected in its content. Which idea comes first, the video or the physical participation of the viewer?

Non Human Device - Boris Chimp 504 / by Rodrigo Carvalho [VISIOPHONE]

During a recent exploration to Kepler22b, an exoplanet from the Kepler-16 binary star system, Boris Chimp 504 found some metallic objects on its surface. Though the origin of this object is totally unknown, it's probably a piece of technology from an extraterrestrial civilization. Boris has sent this object in an hyperspace capsule to the Vladivostok Space Center, on Earth.

It is believed that it's a part of a machine, a mechanism or a device of some kind. Recent investigations on the object lead to believe that it is an interface to control the position and orientation in space and time of something bigger, a spaceship maybe.
The device responds to touch, and generates an electric magnetic field that interferes with audiovisual signals and causes space-time distortions.

In this public installation, the audience will have the opportunity to interact with this “Non Human-Machine Device”, and experience the effects that it causes to audiovisual signals and space-time orientation.

The Real_Dancing_Girl is the ‘2.0 evolution’ of a popular and iconic GIF, known as the Dancing Girl, a pretty, young, brunette lady, dressed in red, wiggling amused in a never-ending loop. ...

I’ve been dancing ever since I was created back in the days.
With the arise of the internet I became a vernacular symbol of freedom among the net, and a source of inspiration for countless users in the pre-history of the web.

The advent of social networks brought a severe, consequently change in the aesthetic of the internet; that's why I felt the need to renew my look, giving myself a more “topical” appearance.
But don't be fooled by this: my 'hula' remains the same ;-)
Feel free – as you’ve always been – to make me dance among your web universe!

Alexander said she thinks piracy is necessary because of country content restrictions, and that while the wealth piracy begets for the pirates isn’t right, the freedom of access to content is. ...

The internet of things - the next big challenge to our privacy by Jat Singh & Julia Powles

The internet of things - the next big challenge to our privacy by Jat Singh & Julia Powles | Digital MediaArts Numériques | Scoop.it
Privacy is a hot-button issue in the tech world. How will it fare in the age of pervasive computing – a world of billions of connected devices, systems, and services exchanging personal data? By Jat Singh and Julia Powles

If there’s a depressing slogan for the early era of the commercial internet, it’s this: “Privacy is dead – get over it.”

For most of us, the internet is complex and opaque. Some might be vaguely aware that their personal data are getting sucked, their search histories tracked, and their digital journeys scoured.

But the current nature of online services provides few mechanisms for individuals to have oversight and control of their information, particularly across tech-vendors.

#ArtCall for Works – CAPTURE ALL - transmediale 2015

#ArtCall for Works – CAPTURE ALL - transmediale 2015 | Digital MediaArts Numériques | Scoop.it

transmediale is a Berlin-based festival and year-round project that draws out new connections between art, culture and technology.

transmediale 2015 will take place from January 28 to February 1 at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin. The programme will feature a diversity of different types of work in a thematic exhibition as well as film and video screenings, workshops, performances, and a conference programme. transmediale is always interested in works exploring our complex relation to technology, be it through new or old media.

  1.

In a society ruled by algorithms, data is always at play. The drive towards the quantification of everything means that we are all contributing to a state of permanent capture of life into data. As citizens, workers and players of networks we (often involuntarily) double as sensors for bodies of global data collection, working for the potential extraction of value everywhere and increasing the productivity of everyday life. If work and leisure became mathematically manageable data units for the assembly line production model of industrial capitalism, today’s workers even offer their free time to the extent that it serves as a form of unaware labour facilitated by playful technologies and game-like mechanics. Are there still modes of being that resist the imperative of digital capitalism to CAPTURE ALL or is there no option but to play along? If so, are there artistic strategies and speculative approaches that do not play this game of quantification by the numbers? What are the blind spots and gaps of relentless quantification and gamification that can be exploited in order to carve out new ways of living?

Light Barrier, 2014 - by by Elliot Woods & Mimi Son (Kimchi and Chips)

Kimchi and Chips create phantoms of light in the air, crossing millions of calibrated beams with their work Light Barrier, 2014. The light installation creates floating graphic objects which animate through space as they do through time.

A fascination with natural light drove the technique of the impressionist painters, they explored new qualities of colour and the trail of time. Kimchi and Chips' study of digital light discusses a new visual mechanic, their installation adding to the visual language of space and light. As the artist's inquiry deepens, brush strokes become descriptive like code, detailing reality and allying light with canvas.
