Paul Duan.

Son but ? « Faire de la Terre un endroit meilleur » grâce à une saine utilisation des données.

Ça peut sembler ambitieux mais, malgré son jeune âge, Paul Duan a déjà quelques succès à son actif : l’optimisation du trajet des ambulances de San Francisco et la prévention des risques dans les hôpitaux. Deux exemples qui sauvent des vies tous les jours rien qu’avec l’utilisation de données statistiques et informatiques !

OccultUs - installation by ECAL/Simon de Diesbach fragment.in /// #mediaart #virtualreality

OccultUs is an installation that exploits the potential of the Occulus Rift technology and offers an absorbing virtual reality display. It immerses the user in a sensory experience that mixes two distinct realities: the palpable, steady and concrete world, overlapping another virtual reality, simulated in three dimensions like a video game.
At the beginning of the experience, users are individually invited to sit among a set of strange and abstract machines and to take hold of the Occulus Rift. At that point, the participant may feel uncomfortable: surrounded by machines and facing the opening screen of the Occulus Rift, he or she sits in the middle of an intriguing installation.

Deep Matter is a 3D printer that is observed by a camera while printing an object. This printing is choreographed: by transforming the gcode, the printer moves up and down, pause and print. The image is analyzed by a neural network which describes what it sees. His misinterpretation is used to select the second object to be printed and so on. These errors and theses prints create a collection of surrealist objects. The printer produce the soundtrack of the installation.

Hacktivism and Cyberwars: Rebels with a cause? by Tim Jordan & Paul A. Taylor (2004) | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

As global society becomes more and more dependent, politically and economically, on the flow of information, the power of those who can disrupt  and  manipulate  that  flow  also  increases.  In  Hacktivism and Cyberwars: Rebels with a cause? Tim Jordan and Paul A. Taylor provide a detailed history of hacktivism’s evolution from early hacking culture to its present-day status as the radical face of online politics. They describe the ways in which hacktivism has re-appropriated hacking techniques to create an innovative new form of political protest.

A full explanation is given of the different strands of hacktivism and the ‘cyberwars’ it  has created, ranging from such avant-garde groups as the Electronic Disturbance Theatre to more virtually focused groups labelled ‘the digitally correct’. The full social and historical context of hacktivism is portrayed  to  take  into  account  its  position  in  terms  of  new  social movements,  direct  action  and  its  contribution  to  the  globalisation debate.  This  book  provides  an  important  corrective  flipside  to mainstream accounts of e-commerce and broadens the conceptualisation of the Internet to take into full account the other side of the digital divide.

Tim Jordan is a Lecturer in Sociology at the Open University and  Paul A. Taylor is  a  Senior  Lecturer  in  the  Institute  for  Communication Studies at the University of Leeds.

"Arcade City" Is a #Blockchain-Based Ride-Sharing Uber Killer

"Arcade City" Is a #Blockchain-Based Ride-Sharing Uber Killer | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Christopher David thinks Uber and Lyft are already relics. He’s created a ride-sharing app that drivers, themselves, will one day own, and he’s gamified the app in the process. Arcade City is the name of the game, and – if David continues to coax this fledgling app out of its nest – it could pose a threat to these established industry leaders.

From their inceptions, Uber and Lyft have made driver recruitment a beautiful, enticing process: Sign on and we’ll give you $500, they say. What these companies don’t explain, except perhaps in the small print, is that these perks are ephemeral, that they can lure drivers in and then cut rates or increase the amount they, Uber and Lyft, pocket at any time they chose.

And that’s just what happened in early January this year: Uber trimmed down on fares, then Lyft followed suit. Drivers nationwide complained and then protested. In their eyes, “trimming fares” just meant “slashing wages.” But these protests were altogether ineffective. ...

Tanks, #drones, rockets and other sound machines. An interview with Nik Nowak // we make money not art | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

This week, i’m interviewing an artist, curator and musician who builds formidable and robust military tanks, drones, rockets and other weapon-looking instruments. Nik Nowak‘s riotous and dangerous toys for big boys investigate how military technologies can invade our everyday life. They pump out powerful sound, spy on your private conversations, turn electromagnetic waves from cell phones and tablets into audible phenomena, and explore how sound can take control over crowds and public space.

One of Nowak’s recent mobile sound sculptures, Echo, uses small tank drones that detect human presence and roll toward it. One of the drones snoops on visitors’ conversations and uses a parametric speaker to send the words directly back to them. Meanwhile, the second vehicle further invades people’s privacy by amplifying these sounds through large speakers.

Nik Nowak is one of the artists represented by SHAPE, a platform for innovative music and audiovisual art from Europe. I got in touch with Nik while he was working on a series of events and on a new album with his band SCHOCKGLATZE. ...

Jller – project by Prokop Bartoníček & Benjamin Maus @ Ex  Post // #mediaart

Jller is part of an ongoing research project in the fields of industrial automation and historical geology. It is an apparatus, that sorts pebbles from a specific river by their geologic age. The stones were taken from the stream bed of the German river Jller, shortly before it merges with the Danube, close to the city of Ulm. The machine and its performance is the first manifestation of this research.

A set of pebbles from the Jller are placed on the 2x4 meter platform of the machine, which automatically analyzes the stones in order to then sort them. The sorting process happens in two steps: Intermediate, pre-sorted patterns are formed first, to make space for the final, ordered alignment of stones, defined by type and age. Starting from an arbitrary set of stones, this process renders the inherent history of the river visible. ...

SHAPE Platform - for innovative music and audiovisual art from Europe // #soundart

SHAPE Platform - for innovative music and audiovisual art from Europe // #soundart | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

It consists of 16 festivals and art centres and aims to support, promote and exchange innovative and aspiring musicians and interdisciplinary artists with an interest in sound. SHAPE attempts to present a variety of idiosyncratic music and sonic art from all over Europe, and provide audiences and professionals with insightful lectures, talks and workshops by experts in various fields related to sound and performance.

The platform was formed by members of ICAS (International Cities of Advanced Sound) – a global network of independent non-profit organizations dedicated to advancing sound cultures, music and related arts.

Each year, the 16 involved associations will collectively choose 48 creatively strong artists and musicians to participate in a mix of live performances, residencies, workshops and talks across festivals and special events.

However, it is also possible for musicians and artists to apply for becoming participants of SHAPE for 2016 or 2017 (deadline: 30 April 2016). Musicians are asked to send an approximately 10 minute long streamable video or audio excerpt of their live performance to info (at) shapeplatform (dot) eu (no attachments please, only links).

Audiovisual artists are asked to send streamable video documentation of their work (up to 10 minutes in length) to the aforementioned e-mail. Materials that are not sent in accordance to these requirements, will not be considered.

As the creation of the annual SHAPE artist roster is rather complex and demands consensus from 16 different organizations, we will not be able to get back to artists or musicians with detailed evaluations of the submitted materials. However, they will be contacted in the case if they’re chosen for SHAPE rosters of 2016 or 2017.

SHAPE is a three-year initiative, co-funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union.

Reconstructing Marienbad - installations by Mats Dekock // #mediaart #cinema #architecture

Reconstructing Marienbad consists of 3 separate installations, inspired by the film classic 'L'Année Dernière à Marienbad' (1961) by Alain Resnais. The installation investigates how a cinematic experience can be transformed into an architectural form.

'Disembodied narrative': all the spoken text from the opening sequence of 'L'Année à Marienbad' is deconstructed in horizontal and vertical elements, that are printed on a disk and look like binary code. The disks rotates under stroboscopic light, which melts the abstract elements back together into a readable text.

'Cinematic Decoupage': this installation is a maquette, which consists out of tendozens perfect copies of the same empty hallway of the movie. The maquette transforms this single frame into a animated sculpture by rotation. Because of the persistence of vision this sculpture transforms into a living and organic image.

'Regard-en-Abyme': this installation combines all the interior rooms and spaces filmed in the opening sequence of 'L'Année à Marienbad' together in an ovular maquette. By using a pinhole camera the slowly rotating maquette is transformed into a cinematic experience and the spectator can wander endlessly through the empty corridors and hallways of the movie.

The project is focused on exploring and communicating an artistic medium, which takes the shape of a technological device in a critical, provocative, or playful manner. It aims at contextualizing and presenting works that are the result of creative tendencies located at the crossroads of art-design, gadget-hack, and hybrid technologies.

The fifth edition of the Device_art triennial will be presented in Montreal in close collaboration with at Eastern Bloc, featuring an exhibition and performances by Croatian, Slovene and Japanese artists: Martina Mezak, Vitar Drinković, Davor Sanvincenti, Margareta Lekić, Lightune.G, Marko Batista, Robertina Šebjanič, Ida Hiršenfelder & Aleš Hieng-Zergon, Saša Spačal, Takeshi Oozu, and Hiroo Iwata.
