Often acoustic space is ignored in the construction of a public space, yet the negative impact this has does not seem to get many complaints. People rarely require more quality of the sonic world, because the average consumer does not have the necessary references to change this state of affairs. We know that the prevalence of noise or sounds that do not convey any social significance and are a disturbance of the quality of life, reduces the ability to identify with the place we inhabit. It is therefore urgent to think about the acoustical problems societies are facing today and integrate that thinking in urban planning, architecture and management of public space, because the idea we have of ourselves, our personal awareness and the relationships we build in the external world, are inextricably linked to a space. We all exist somewhere. And personal identity also relates to this.

It also follows a series of Live Coding Research Network symposia on diverse topics, and the activities of the TOPLAP community since 2004. We hope that this conference will act as a confluence for all this work, helping establish live coding as an interdisciplinary field, exploring liveness in symbolic abstractions, and understanding the perceptual, creative, productive, philosophical and cultural consequences.

The Performance of Infrastructure: Review of Interactive Art and Embodiment... by Nathaniel Stern

The Performance of Infrastructure: Review of Interactive Art and Embodiment... by Nathaniel Stern | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Earlier this year, I had the good fortune to sit in on a talk given by Simon Penny on May 6th 2014 at the University of Exeter. Penny, not unlike Nathaniel Stern, is best known for his praxis, writing and teaching on interactive (and robotic) installations focusing on issues of embodiment, relationality and materiality. So as unorthodox as its inclusion is to start off a review, Penny’s reflections are pertinent here (in this case, Penny’s famous installations Fugitive (1997) and Traces (1999).

The purpose of Fugitive and Traces (if you can say they had one) sought to ‘embody’ virtual reality through multi-camera infra-red sensors, visual models and real-time movements. At that time, Penny’s unique theoretical take was to distance human-computer interaction away from “a system of abstracted and conventionalised signals” to where the user would “communicate kinesthetically”: instead of investigating the non-human or “inhuman” formal qualities of its medium, or some vague VR future that leaves the body behind, the system itself would “come closer to the native sensibilities of the human.” ...

A major exhibition exploring the twilight world of human/machine creativity, including installations, video and computer art, Artificial Intelligence, robotics and Apps by leading artists from Goldsmiths and international artists by invitation.

The vision for organising the Creative Machine Exhibition is to show exciting works by key international artists, Goldsmiths staff and selected students who use original software and hardware development in the creative production of their work.

The range of work on show, which could be broadly termed Computer Art, includes mechanical drawing devices, kinetic sculpture driven by fuzzy logic, images produced using machine learning, simulated cellular growth forms and the self-generating works using automated aesthetics, VR, 3D printing, and social telephony networks.

Traditionally, Computer Art has held a maverick position on the edge of mainstream contemporary culture with its origins in Russian Constructivist Art, biological systems, “geeky” software conferences, rave / techno music and indie computer games. These artists have defined their own channels for exhibiting their work and organised conferences and at times been entrepreneurial at building collaborations with industry at both a corporate and startup level (with the early computer artists in the 1970s and 1980s needing to work with computer corporations to get access to computers). Alongside this, interactive media art drew upon McLuhan’s notion of technology as extensions of the human to create participatory, interactive artworks by making use of novel interface technology that has been developed since the 1980s.

Digital technology has infiltrates every aspect of our daily life. The evolutionof diverse and interdisciplinary digital art has become one of the most vital issues in the contemporary world. In the era of digital media and digital culture, the digitalization has changed the way of media (e.g. texts, images and sounds) connection. In terms of production, digital technology has created new working styles and redefinedinterpersonal relationships, which therefore turns us into a vital link in the ecosystem of digital art.

The rich content of the 9th Digital Art Festival Taipei is developed by a curatorial team comprised of four representative digital art practitioners. The festival this year treats Ecosystem as the theme. Since the connotations of the term“ecosystem” in natural sciencesand anthropology are no longer able to coverthe new form of ecosystem in the information age, the festival this year highlights the distinguishing features of the new digital ecosystem in which digital technology facilitates the interdisciplinary connection of media.

In addition to the International Digital Art Exhibition, the 9th Digital Art Festival Taipeialso establishes the AnimA Awardsto encourage Chinese animation makers around the globe. Moreover, the festival presents The Art of Video Games and the Instrumental Design in the thematic exhibition area ofthe Digital Art Platform. These events deeplyexplorethe multi-faceted digital culture. The festival expects to establish a solid foundation for Taiwan’s digital art and gathergreatermomentum for its long-term development, and thereby connects theavant-garde digital art creations in Taiwan with the international digital art community. I sincerely invite you to this elaborately organized festival, where you willfully experience the creative wonder and pleasure brought by digital technology.

The MediaAC master program answers the needs of the evolving fields related to the future and heritage of Media Arts Cultures. Our global digital world is filled with new media culture that encompasses the big questions of today such as the processes of globalisation, utopias of neuroscience, political repression, big data, and the growing world-wide surveillance. Thus, the analysis of media arts cultures is socially and culturally enlightening. The examination of evolving media art forms offers technological insights, which are vital to the next generation of software and hardware engineers, as well as to cultural practitioners. Media Arts have great potential for critical reflection and future innovation. They are especially vulnerable to decay as media evolution accelerates and require new methods of digital heritage preservation.

Biting Elbows - 'Bad Motherfucker' Official Music Video by Ilya Naishuller - #gaming

Created by director (and band frontman) Ilya Naishuller and post-production designer Sergey Valyaev, "Bad Motherfucker" retains the gauzy, color-drained look of the first video, in addition to its nihilistic carnage. From the first moment, wherein our hero seems about to die, all that can be heard is opera music. After the condemned makes an initial escape, however, involving German shepherd damage and a useful billiard cue ball, things get seriously twisted—with a body count that explains why YouTube may have pulled the video hours after its release. (As of the afternoon of March 18, it has been restored.)

For six years I have been studying the protest ensemble Anonymous. Some challenges come with the job. By definition, Anonymous is a faceless collective. As many participants in this milieu conceal their identities carefully, it was impossible to tell who lay behind the mask.

Nevertheless, since most Anons engaged with each other using pseudonymous nicknames, I interacted with a stable cast of characters on the chat channels where I did the great bulk of my ethnographic research on Anonymous. People developed reputations, and their personalities and linguistic idiosyncrasies shone through their text-based conversations.

But Sabu was unique. ...

Organized by Golan Levin (@golan), this is the first “kinect-hacking” conference. It celebrates arts-oriented and tinkering-based approaches to interaction research. Also interesting to note that scholarships for women are available, described on the event main page. Speakers include some stars well known to CAN readers, such as Zachary Lieberman (oF), Kyle McDonald, Elliot Woods, Joel Gethin Lewis (ex-UVA) with also a diverse array of workshops utilising popular programming toolkits (P5, oF, Ard, MM/J ,Pd, etc.). Erkki Huhtamo, media arts historian (“media archaeologist”), will provide some historical perspective.
