Dirty New Media Art / Erica Peplin (2011) - #mediaart #glitchart #netart | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Technology is a field typically associated with smooth screens, organized interfaces, and on a larger scale, with the pride and “progress” of western civilization. Dirty New Media, a branch of New Media Art, seeks to subvert these unquestioned assumptions by problematizing, rather than idealizing, common technologies. The “dirty” stems from the movement’s deliberate incorporation of brokenness as artists, hackers, and activists alike intentional hack, reconstruct, and complicate aspects of computer culture. By embracing the cyber flaws, short circuits, and disjointed components, Dirty New Media refers to a menagerie of alternative practices and subcultures spanning from punk and digital sampling to piracy and pornography. ...

#Graffiti Fur: Turning Your Carpet Into a Computer Display :)

This new display technology, Graffiti Fur, utilizes the fact that the shading properties of fur change as the fibers are raised or flattened. Users can erase drawings by sweeping the surface with the hand and flattening the fibers, and then draw lines by moving fingers in the opposite direction and raising the fibers. These material properties can be found in various items such as carpets in our living environments.

The Graffiti Fur demonstration allows users to draw patterns on two different "fur displays" using a roller device and a pen device. The technology converts ordinary objects into rewritable displays without requiring or creating any non-reversible modifications. In addition, it can be used to present large-scale images without glare, and the images it creates require no operating costs.

World Brain : l'expérience d'une humanité connectée | Stéphane Degoutin interview ARTE Creative | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Rock Magic: Jimmy Page, Led Zeppelin, And a search for the elusive Stairway to Heaven by William Burroughs, Crawdaddy Magazine, June 1975. When I was first asked to write an article on the Led Zepp...

When I was first asked to write an article on the Led Zeppelin group, to be based on attending a concert and talking with Jimmy Page, I was not sure I could do it, not being sufficiently knowledgeable about music to attempt anything in the way of musical criticism or even evaluation. I decided simply to attend the concert and talk with Jimmy Page and let the article develop. If you consider any set of data without a preconceived viewpoint, then a viewpoint will emerge from the data.

My first impression was of the audience. As we streamed through one security line after another–a river of youth looking curiously like a single organism: one well-behaved clean-looking middle-class kid. The security guards seemed to be cool and well-trained, ushering gate-crashers out with a minimum of fuss. We were channeled smoothly into our seats in the thirteenth row. Over a relaxed dinner before the concert, a Crawdaddy companion had said he had a feeling that something bad could happen at this concert. I pointed out that it always can when you get that many people together–like bullfights where you buy a straw hat at the door to protect you from bottles and other missiles. I was displacing possible danger to a Mexican border town where the matador barely escaped with his life and several spectators were killed. It’s known as “clearing the path.”

#MediaArt. Toward a new Definition of Arts in the Age of Technology by Valentino Catricalà

#MediaArt. Toward a new Definition of Arts in the Age of Technology by Valentino Catricalà | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

This publication and the festival with which it is associated – takes an anthologi-cal approach to Media Art, with a focus upon the host nation but in a wider Euro-pean context. This is apposite, as the term Media Art is quintessentially European rather than Anglo-Saxon, where it has not thus far been comfortably adopted as a collective label for the wide variety of artistic activity that has been produced and developed since the early 1980s. There is presently a diverse range of practice: Media Art can encompass many media and art-forms (film, video, sound – sound art, time based art, performance art, installation art, computer art, sci-art, interac-tive art etc.), but today is most often associated by the use of digital technologies. As an artist that has lived and produced work through two technological break-throughs: the emergence of video as a carrier and recorder of sound and image; secondly the advent of the personal computer; I hold an ambivalent position to claims for ‘the digital’. Media art is contemporary and temporary and certainly not all the same: there are many differences of background, training and motivation between the pro-tagonists – the artists. They may identify themselves as a media artist, sic artist, technologist, media activist, video artist or none of the above. If this is true of the artists it is even more so for the theorists and writers on media art.

e-flux Journal - #62 February 2015 | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Increasingly it seems like no large exhibition opens without an artist boycott. And the reasons to withdraw are legitimate—a gulf museum employs migrant labor under terms approaching slavery, a biennial sponsor corporation operates an offshore detention center, works are censored for petty moral reasons, a municipality passes a homophobic law, or funding is traced to an occupying state with a staggering record of ongoing human rights abuses.

Of course, these petitions can start to come off as a nuisance to those who believe that a healthy cultural industrial complex thrives on its distance from power and politics, as if some kind of contemplative distancing that makes art possible in the first place must also be too elegant to deal with the mundane financing or bloodstained politics of its hosts. But now there are so many petitions, so many threats to withdraw, that it becomes clear that the conditions for producing and exhibiting art have become ethically unbearable for too many artists—and this comes at the same time that the economic and political utility of contemporary art is becoming clear to global players discovering how supporting vanguard cultural production can humanize their own image. ...

Publisher Gestalten writes: 3D  printers will soon be found in more and more workshops, offices, and homes. With them, we will be able to print out small pieces of furniture, prototypes, replacement parts, and even a new toothbrush on-site at any time. Consequently, new production methods and business models are developing--along with a new visual language of multidimensional formal explorations. Today, 3D objects and complex forms can already be printed out that were previously impossible to achieve with traditional methods.

Printing Things is an inspirational and understandable exploration of the creative potential of 3D printing. The book not only introduces outstanding projects, key experts, and the newest technologies, but it also delves into the complex topics that these paradigm-shifting technologies bring up, such as how to handle copyrights and seamless manufacturing. ...
