Building a better human by Kate Lunau

Building a better human by Kate Lunau | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it
Scientists are already able to replace many worn-out or missing body parts with new ones. But two-thirds of a person?

Growing a human organ is a bit like baking a layer cake, says Dr. Anthony Atala, director of the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine. Let’s say the “cake” we want is a kidney. After harvesting cells from the patient’s kidney and coaxing them to multiply—mixing up the cake batter—Atala’s team bastes those cells onto a biodegradable scaffold, one painstaking layer at a time. “Once there’s the right amount,” he says, “we put it in an oven-like device that has the same conditions as the human body.” The kidney “bakes” inside the bioreactor for a couple of weeks, where it’s also exercised. Then it’s ready for implant. Eventually, the scaffold melts away, leaving the new organ.

A donor kidney was the first organ to be successfully transplanted into a patient, in 1954. Five decades later, we’re building new ones from scratch—growing them on scaffolds or printing them with modified desktop printers that shoot cells instead of ink. About 14 years ago, Atala’s team implanted bioengineered bladders into patients and, he says, “they’ve lasted all these years.” He and other scientists are moulding jumbles of cells into heart valves, ears, stomachs and skin. They’re building advanced prosthetics, including bionic hands and legs, which mimic natural function and can even be controlled by our minds. More and more people will live their lives with these artificial parts integrated into their bodies. ...

Towards an Art History for #Videogames - by Lana Polansky /// #gaming #gameart #mediaart | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

If videogames can be said to possess an “official history,” it is predicated primarily on the advancement of technology, the shifting of markets, and the consolidation of multinational corporations. This is a history which prioritizes technological advancement, from computer gaming’s rise as the product of quiet dissent among the engineers of military computers at MIT (Spacewar!created by MIT engineers in 1962, is often regarded as the first iconic computer game),1 to the clinking of arcade machines and the ensuing success of the home console, which allowed publishers to cut out the middleman and sell their products directly to consumers. The changes that followed—developments like Jerry Lawson’s brilliant removable cartridges, which allowed games to be sold separately and individually from the consoles that ran them (prior to this, games were hard-coded into consoles and cabinets), and the less-brilliant Bit Wars, marked by petty marketing and consumer battles over the relative processing power of competing consoles—are understood through the lens of tech-progressivism.

Creative Director revealed for 2018 Mediale festival - York City of Media Arts

Creative Director revealed for 2018 Mediale festival - York City of Media Arts | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Make It York is pleased to announce the appointment of Tom Higham as Creative Director for York’s new international media arts festival, the Mediale.

Tom joins York after spending 10 years in leadership positions within the world of media arts and creative technology, most recently as the Executive Director of Manchester based digital arts festival FutureEverything – a position he left in June 2016.

Tom’s role involves an initial consultation period, followed by a 2-year contract to deliver the Mediale and surrounding activity should major funding bids be successful

The search for an ambitious, confident and inspirational artistic leader to bring together and inspire collaborators locally, nationally and internationally attracted a high number of quality candidates. A rigorous interview process with a panel of some of York’s cultural/creative leaders decided that Tom was the best person for the job.

Reflecting a step-change moment in York’s media arts programming, the brief is to build and engage audiences with exciting, innovative and high quality programming, whilst maintaining a commitment to education and talent development. It follows York’s designation as the UK’s first UNESCO City of Media Arts and extensive early consultation with over 300 potential partners and artists, including the new Guild of Media Arts...

The Serious Relationship of Art and Technology by Silka P. and Andrey V. | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Both technology and art define and continue to reshape the world we live in. Re-imagining what we know as real or as a solid ground, pushes not only our opinions and understandings of nature to the limits, but with new inventions and experiments, both the mind and the body, the language, and the world itself seems to be making room for a new sphere and new rules. Governed by the new aesthetics, the virtual, the scientific and the logic that is beyond belief, technology in art challenges our perceptions and that is what creativity and science are all about. If we are to understand that art reflects the period of time we are all in, how are we to grasp the growing number of young contemporary artists that base their practice on the presentation of immaterial and ephemeral things? ...

Overcoming any borders, be they external borders or one's own, is invariably accompanied by a feeling of their other predestination. The matter seems to lie not even in the fact that man in himself is a creature implicating restrictions, and only through it and thanks to it he can overcome them - it is rather that while leaving a border one always approaches another border. In the long run, by repeatedly reproducing the border situation, the man rather ritually recreates the only verge, a reminder-verge, over which he - a being formed within the framework of his heredity flow - is initially denied possession of power. Namely, he cannot possess power over the borders set by his birth and death… Nothing can bring out this essentially simple speculation better than issues of time and technologies that claim abolishment and removal of time constraints. The pioneering direct manipulations in this field, performed via bio- and genetic technologies, definitely belong to the most significant milestones of the current era and are an important step forward in the development of the general theme of "borders" within European cultures, and a new subject in the exploration and realization of this theme. Never before, it seems, has the price of such research been so breathtakingly high: man begins to reshape himself according to his own conceptions. By decoding our biological structure and learning to alter it, we gain power over our own evolution. We start traveling into the unknown …

Overly saturated discourses in the public sphere about emerging technologies and the optimistic prophecy that surrounds it have held our imagination under seige, under the spell of a new theology. This leaves us no mental space for “epistemological” contemplation and reflection, only able to react to its immediate effects. Physicist Richard Feynman pointed out the dialectic split of human beings learn- ing about the world: either driven by concepts (epistemological) or tools (science and technology), “if our discoveries are driven by concepts, we tend to explain the old stuff from a new angle, if it’s driven by tools, we end up explaining what we have created or discovered”.

The distinct human condition of essentially not being able to coexist with our natural environment has led us to invent tools to increase our natural capacity and to change our environment. In the classic scene from Stanley Kubrick's “2001: A Space Odyssey”, at the dawn of civilisation, apes accidentally discovered that a piece of leg bone could be used as a weapon. The film shows the bone transformed into a gigantic space craft drifting in the darkness of space...

… and what comes after self-driving cars and the internet of things?

While the world still has its hands full dealing with the Digital Revolution and the cultural and social transformations and challenges that it’s brought about, a young generation of scientists and creative engineers has set a course for new frontiers and is already at work amalgamating the disembodied world of digital data with the physical world of our bodies.
They’re interconnecting bits and atoms in elementary form, fabricating new high-tech materials from natural substances. They’re teaming up with artists and designers, employing the neurosciences and biotechnology, digital hardware & software, and bringing together old handicrafts traditions with 3-D printers and laser cutters.

With their unorthodox approaches and highly inspiring projects, they’re not only blazing trails for new developments; they’re also opening up completely new ways of looking at the role of science in our society and the interplay of technology and nature...
