Sounds, Images and Data 2015, hosted at New York University, Reinhardt School is a conference that analyzes the role of the artists and curators in creating new experiences and aesthetics in the 21st century. By mixing a series of contemporary technologies, big data, social media practices and innovative approaches both to curating and artistic practices, contemporary creators and commentators are envisaging and constructing a different world where different strands collide. These practices could be defined as convergent, but they actually bring a complexity to the field of studies that cannot be subsumed under an homologating system, rather it appears to produce multiple and sometimes contradictory aesthetics. ...

HOLO 2 – Back to the (not-so-distant) future by Alexander Scholz on Creative Applications | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Wobbly drawing machines with personality, a roomful of light bulbs that pulse the syncopated rhythm of a hundred heartbeats, bouncing an encoding of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata off the moon—HOLO returns to the frontiers of twenty-first century creativity this spring.

Here’s a preview and the journey so far:“If anything, this magazine is an attempt to come to terms with the new normal,” is how the first issue of HOLO opined on our “hyper-connected, accelerating present that is a mere innovation cycle away from fantastical (or dystopian) fiction” in spring 2014. Since then we’ve seen the fall of the Berlin wall commemorated with a floating wall of light (8,000 balloons, each laden with LEDs) and the harrowing landing of the Philae probe on comet 67P (hurtling across space at 80,000 km/h) while our concerns about the erosion of privacy continue to grow. Clearly, the new normal isn’t slowing down anytime soon. ...

Learn more about the making of HOLO 2. Featuring over 30 contributors from a dozen countries and a hefty 200 pages of premium print, HOLO returns and endeavours to be smarter, more substantive, and more special than our first issue.

Versuch unter Kreisen by Julius von Bismarck - Collide@CERN - #mediaart #lightart

The lights turn in their separate orbits out of synch, driven by real data, but on the 78th turn strangely come into synch together for one complete circle. The piece has been also exhibited in Berlin and Taiwan at the Fine Arts Museum. In an unexpected creative collision from the residency programme, the first Collide@CERN Geneva artist Gilles Jobin asked Julius at his final lecture of his residency if Versuch could become the installation for his new choreography developed at CERN. Julius said yes, and as a consequence the installation is Julius's first art work ever used in a dance piece. Together with Gilles Jobin, they entered the Hermes New Settings Award in 2012 for dancers and visual artists - and won it. As a result the dance piece, called Quantum, with the light installation is touring over 10 countries around the globe. An unusual and little known fact is that Versuch was actually created by Julius with dancing in mind. He said he had always wanted dancing to happen under the lights, so it was pure serendipity when Gilles approached him.

The Evolution of 8-Bit Art | #8bitart

Beginning with early Atari and Nintendo video games, the 8-bit aesthetic has been a part of our culture for over 30 years. As it moved through the generations, 8-bit earned its independence from its video game roots. The idea of 8-bit now stands for a refreshing level of simplicity and minimalism, is capable of sonic and visual beauty, and points to the layer of technology that suffuses our modern lives. No longer just nostalgia art, contemporary 8-bit artists and chiptunes musicians have elevated the form to new levels of creativity and cultural reflection.

This game eliminates intimidation of many kids and their parents, bored by the mention of "computer programming", often associated with visions of geeky guys glued to their computers. c-jump reveals simple programming terms in a cool way!

By moving around the board , entering loops, branching under conditional and switch statements, the players gain physical experience of a complete program. Understanding of the internal action of a computer is essential to understanding what software is. Static program causes dynamic process in the computer. By playing the game, players see this process as physical and spacial motion.

#Hacking, The Art of Exploitation | by Jon Erickson - No Starch Press (2nd Edition - 2008) | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Hacking is the art of creative problem solving, whether that means finding an unconventional solution to a difficult problem or exploiting holes in sloppy programming. Many people call themselves hackers, but few have the strong technical foundation needed to really push the envelope.

Rather than merely showing how to run existing exploits, author Jon Erickson explains how arcane hacking techniques actually work. To share the art and science of hacking in a way that is accessible to everyone, Hacking: The Art of Exploitation, 2nd Edition introduces the fundamentals of C programming from a hacker's perspective.

The included LiveCD provides a complete Linux programming and debugging environment—all without modifying your current operating system. Use it to follow along with the book's examples as you fill gaps in your knowledge and explore hacking techniques on your own. Get your hands dirty debugging code, overflowing buffers, hijacking network communications, bypassing protections, exploiting cryptographic weaknesses, and perhaps even inventing new exploits...
