De l’art « post-Internet » | On “post-Internet” Art (fr+en) by Zérodeux Revue - #netart #mediaart

De l’art « post-Internet » | On “post-Internet” Art (fr+en) by Zérodeux Revue - #netart #mediaart | Digital MediaArts Numériques | Scoop.it

Some time ago the term “post-Internet” came to our attention, used to describe and analyze the activities of a new generation of artists, born in the 1980s and marked by the influence of the Internet during their artistic training in the 2000s. This last decade in fact witnessed the democratization of the web (with its 2.0 version), the peak of social networks, unlimited access to knowledge, and online sales, all tools favourable to artistic creation at a time when the principle of inter-disciplinarity in the visual arts seems to be a given. Yet this term, post-Internet, seems to focus on art praxes which regard the Internet not only as a work tool but also as an aesthetic godsend per se, both self-sufficient and making it possible to explore and inform the boundless complexity of our contemporary societies.....

Institute of Ideas - Expanding the Boundaries of Public Debate

Institute of Ideas - Expanding the Boundaries of Public Debate | Digital MediaArts Numériques | Scoop.it

The Institute of Ideas was founded in 2000 to provide a forum committed to open and robust public debate in which ideas can be interrogated, argued for and fought over. We organise intelligent public debates, on controversial topics, and most importantly challenge contemporary knee-jerk orthodoxies. One focus of our work is to ensure that new generations look behind the headlines and avoid over simplistic conclusions on difficult topics. We are especially concerned about the ‘dumbing down’ of debate, and to this end we organise a range of high-profile public events.

We aim through our events, projects and salons to create an atmosphere of intellectual freedom and a space for open-ended exploration of new ideas, research and trends, but very much in the sense of a public intellectual gathering: a truly accessible, living university.

Founder and Director Claire Fox was publisher of LM (Living Marxism) and set up the Institute of Ideas when LM magazine was closed after a libel action in 2000. The Institute of Ideas is not associated with any particular political party, but we are passionately interested in politics.

Cataloguing Change: Women, Art and Technology - Victoria and Albert Museum

Cataloguing Change: Women, Art and Technology - Victoria and Albert Museum | Digital MediaArts Numériques | Scoop.it

Focussing on key objects in the V&A’s digital art collection, this article considers the relationship between women, art and technology. It contextualises early digital practices and documents the significant contribution made by female artists, curators and educators inspired by the creative potential of new technologies.

The recent acquisition of Women and Technology (fig. 1), a silkscreen poster by Barbara Nessim, highlights the key theme addressed in this article – the important contribution made by women who have used the computer in the visual arts. Computer art is a broad label used, in the context of the V&A, as a historical term to describe work made using the computer as a tool from around the 1960s until the early 1980s. ...

#Glitch Textiles - Fragmented Memory - by Phillip Stearns - #mediaart

#Glitch Textiles - Fragmented Memory - by Phillip Stearns - #mediaart | Digital MediaArts Numériques | Scoop.it

Hi there!  I'm Phillip Stearns, creator of Glitch Textiles and Year of the Glitch.  The Glitch Textiles project was started in 2011 with the goal of exploring the intersections of textiles and digital art.  The idea was simple: Transcode glitches in the cold, hard logic of digital circuits into soft, warm textiles. The result is art that bridges the digital/virtual divide and reconnects the histories of woven image making and computer technologies.

Following a successful funding campaign on Kickstarter in 2012, Glitch Textiles has grown to include a range of woven and knit wall hangings and blankets whose patterns are generated using images taken with short circuited cameras and other unorthodox digital techniques, including data visualization aided by the use of tools developed for digital forensics.

For the time being, everything is run by yours truly, though I have to credit my robot weavers and their human overlords in NC and NJ, at Pure Country Weavers and Photothrow.com.  You have their guarantee and mine that all products are manufactured here in the US.

DWI Modular / Different Ways To Infinity by Felix Luque - #mediaart

The system is composed of 10 rhombic dodecahedrons, geometrical objects part of the family of «Space-filling polyhedra»: shapes that can be assembled to generate a tessellation of an infinite space. These forms act as the building blocks for a sculpture generator.

To assemble then, the artist has developed an electronic magnetic connector, which enables all possible combinations, connecting the 10 units using any of the 12 faces of each polyhedron. For the exhibition the artist designed one specific geometrical configuration, a closed shape assembly exploiting at their best the formal and dramatic qualities of this sculpture generator.

The making of Fuji - AV installation by Joanie Lemercier

The making of Fuji - AV installation by Joanie Lemercier | Digital MediaArts Numériques | Scoop.it

I’m really happy to introduce a new audiovisual installation named FUJI (不死). The project was developed during an artist residency in Takamatsu, Japan, in the art island district. I was invited to present Eyjafjallajökull, a project inspired by Icelandic volcano’s eruption in 2010, consisting of a large drawing animated through projections of light. But the proximity of mount Fuji urged me to develop a new piece.

ASCENSION

During my stay in Japan, I had a chance to actually get to the Fujiyama and climb it for a day. We couldn’t get to the top this time, but during the ascension through the fog, the changing weather would let the summit appear for a few moments, making it seem unreachable and almost unreal. It felt like an intangible monument to the glory of nature. Photos by Juliette Bibasse. ...

We collaborated with interactive director and New Museum fellow, Aramique from Tool. Together we created “The Heart Bot”. The Heart Bot is an experimental drawing machine controlled by the heart rate of a viewer. Heart Bot collects heart rate data from a large group of people during a fixed time, at a fixed location and translates it into generative art, demonstrating that each individual experiences a moment in a very personal way. Google’s quantum computer just flunked its first big test - #innovation | Digital MediaArts Numériques | Scoop.it

When the D-Wave 2 was first released last year, it was accompanied by a tidal wave of hype. The machine was a self-proclaimed quantum computer, commercially available to anyone with $15 million to spend, and attracting the attention of everyone from NASA to the NSA. One of the computer’s buyers was Google, which launched a new lab to test the device's powers more rigorously than they’d ever been tested before. This October, the lab announced a major discovery, providing stronger evidence for quantum effects within the D-Wave 2 than anyone had previously found. As D-Wave had claimed, its device really was quantum-powered — and Google’s big research bet seemed to be paying off. ...
