Tanks, #drones, rockets and other sound machines. An interview with Nik Nowak // we make money not art | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

This week, i’m interviewing an artist, curator and musician who builds formidable and robust military tanks, drones, rockets and other weapon-looking instruments. Nik Nowak‘s riotous and dangerous toys for big boys investigate how military technologies can invade our everyday life. They pump out powerful sound, spy on your private conversations, turn electromagnetic waves from cell phones and tablets into audible phenomena, and explore how sound can take control over crowds and public space.

One of Nowak’s recent mobile sound sculptures, Echo, uses small tank drones that detect human presence and roll toward it. One of the drones snoops on visitors’ conversations and uses a parametric speaker to send the words directly back to them. Meanwhile, the second vehicle further invades people’s privacy by amplifying these sounds through large speakers.

Nik Nowak is one of the artists represented by SHAPE, a platform for innovative music and audiovisual art from Europe. I got in touch with Nik while he was working on a series of events and on a new album with his band SCHOCKGLATZE. ...

Reconstructing Marienbad - installations by Mats Dekock // #mediaart #cinema #architecture

Reconstructing Marienbad consists of 3 separate installations, inspired by the film classic 'L'Année Dernière à Marienbad' (1961) by Alain Resnais. The installation investigates how a cinematic experience can be transformed into an architectural form.

'Disembodied narrative': all the spoken text from the opening sequence of 'L'Année à Marienbad' is deconstructed in horizontal and vertical elements, that are printed on a disk and look like binary code. The disks rotates under stroboscopic light, which melts the abstract elements back together into a readable text.

'Cinematic Decoupage': this installation is a maquette, which consists out of tendozens perfect copies of the same empty hallway of the movie. The maquette transforms this single frame into a animated sculpture by rotation. Because of the persistence of vision this sculpture transforms into a living and organic image.

'Regard-en-Abyme': this installation combines all the interior rooms and spaces filmed in the opening sequence of 'L'Année à Marienbad' together in an ovular maquette. By using a pinhole camera the slowly rotating maquette is transformed into a cinematic experience and the spectator can wander endlessly through the empty corridors and hallways of the movie.

FIELD x Chorus, interactive installation at the British Library (2013)

FIELD x Chorus, interactive installation at the British Library (2013) | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Chorus is a data-driven art installation that translates Twitter reactions to current affairs into evocative typographic choreographies. Commissioned by the British Library for its major exhibition "Propaganda: Power and Persuasion”, the artwork examines how ideas and opinions spread via social networks, and their potential to influence public opinion.

With each act in the London Olympics Opening Ceremony, a burst of excitement spans the screen. From Obama’s re-election tweet “Four more years” we zoom out to reveal it as the most retweeted message in history. In the timespan from the Sandy Hook Shootings to Obama’s state of the union address, we observe the shifts of opinions among the US pro- and anti-gun lobbies.

Forming the atmospheric closing piece of the exhibition, the installation provokes questions about propagandistic patterns in contemporary digital communication.

OccultUs - installation by ECAL/Simon de Diesbach fragment.in /// #mediaart #virtualreality

OccultUs is an installation that exploits the potential of the Occulus Rift technology and offers an absorbing virtual reality display. It immerses the user in a sensory experience that mixes two distinct realities: the palpable, steady and concrete world, overlapping another virtual reality, simulated in three dimensions like a video game.
At the beginning of the experience, users are individually invited to sit among a set of strange and abstract machines and to take hold of the Occulus Rift. At that point, the participant may feel uncomfortable: surrounded by machines and facing the opening screen of the Occulus Rift, he or she sits in the middle of an intriguing installation.

Jller – project by Prokop Bartoníček & Benjamin Maus @ Ex  Post // #mediaart

Jller is part of an ongoing research project in the fields of industrial automation and historical geology. It is an apparatus, that sorts pebbles from a specific river by their geologic age. The stones were taken from the stream bed of the German river Jller, shortly before it merges with the Danube, close to the city of Ulm. The machine and its performance is the first manifestation of this research.

A set of pebbles from the Jller are placed on the 2x4 meter platform of the machine, which automatically analyzes the stones in order to then sort them. The sorting process happens in two steps: Intermediate, pre-sorted patterns are formed first, to make space for the final, ordered alignment of stones, defined by type and age. Starting from an arbitrary set of stones, this process renders the inherent history of the river visible. ...

Deep Matter is a 3D printer that is observed by a camera while printing an object. This printing is choreographed: by transforming the gcode, the printer moves up and down, pause and print. The image is analyzed by a neural network which describes what it sees. His misinterpretation is used to select the second object to be printed and so on. These errors and theses prints create a collection of surrealist objects. The printer produce the soundtrack of the installation.

Barthélemy Antoine-Loeff is a french filmmaker and new media artist, based in Paris. He explores, the fragility of the world, using installations and performances. He's staging immersive and poetic audiovisual experiences to make visible what is not, twisting reality to extract other dimensions : some doors open onto universe full of mysteries...

Attracted by the darkness and the light which may arise therein, by the opposing forces, fed by the Italian cinema of the years 60/70 and the kinetic art, he creates precarious and ephemeral balance that can break into a fraction of a second. With his language based on the mechanics of dreams and madness and its cinematographic aesthetics, he's questionning the look and the influence of the humans on their surroundings. In 2016, his work Ljós is nominated to the International Digital Art Prize, Prix Cube.

Terminator Studies, Jean-Baptiste Bayle @ la gaîté lyrique (2014) /// #mediaart #netart | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Fructus animalis - 2 weeks interactive art residency in the #fablab of La fruitere numerique | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

This work is the fruit of a shared tech-art residency in the biggest rural fablab of Europe, "La fruitere numerique". The tech-artists specialties are a priori opposed in their disciplines but dialogue gave a new dimension to their work. After digging in the personalities, the obvious appears, the roots of this team's work join in a fundamental principle, a strong desire to give back life to apparently dead or unwanted material. Evolving in hackerspaces is also a great training for the tech side of the team, fighting against planned obsolescence being a tradition, the good reflexes were immediately ready.

Moreover, "La Fruitiere Numerique" participates in this fight by collecting a great number of aging electronic devices so parts salvage was even simpler than finding food : infrared sensors & emitters from broken VCRs & remote, old mouse sensor, lasers from DVD burner, etc.

The collaborations of these makers gave birth to an exhibition in which the visitor is in immersion. For him, it's a total artwork experimentation, in which every elements are connected.

JayWalking gives us an opportunity to watch traffic webcams and decide on the fate of pedestrians recklessly crossing the road. Old security monitors display live webcam footage of intersections in different countries. A counter at the bottom of the screen shows how much the fines are for the offense, depending on the country where it’s being committed.

Depoorter then presents us with a dilemma: will we report the unsuspecting jaywalker? A single click of a mouse can send a screenshot of the violation to the nearest police station.
