'State of Surveillance' with Edward #Snowden and Shane Smith

When NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden leaked details of massive government surveillance programs in 2013, he ignited a raging debate over digital privacy and security. That debate came to a head this year, when Apple refused an FBI court order to access the iPhone of alleged San Bernardino Terrorist Syed Farook. Meanwhile, journalists and activists are under increasing attack from foreign agents. To find out the government's real capabilities, and whether any of us can truly protect our sensitive information, VICE founder Shane Smith heads to Moscow to meet the man who started the conversation, Edward Snowden.

Packetbridge (2012-2015) - wireless geographical network intervention by Gordan Savičić & Bengt Sjölén - Critical Engineer

Packetbridge (Packetbrücke) is a wireless geographical network intervention. It explores simulating entire network situations by transferring electromagnetic infrastructure to a different physical space. Wireless network packets are directly captured from a specific location and tunneled through the Internet to a remote location, where they are released back into the air. In doing so, Packetbridge literally injects one geographical space into another, effectively producing a new imaginary topography and, through this remediation, an “impossible reality”.

Packetbridge demonstrates that positioning systems based on WLAN are a site for intervention, expressing at the same moment they are vulnerable to location spoofing attacks. This effect is especially interesting, considering that we increasingly rely on an ever-growing number of wireless devices for localization, navigation and time-synchronization.

Tipping Point, installation by Lawrence Malstaf (2013)

A layer of water is contained by two sheets of glass. Two motors tilt the glass disc at barely visible angles. A large air bubble slowly changes shape and moves around in the water. It tries to find a new equilibrium under a map of the arctic ice that is printed on top of the glass. A spotlight circles around the installation like a sun. It projects a rotating shadow including motion patterns of the water that are not visible in the original disc.

Les attracteurs étranges by François Quévillon - Interactive Architectural intervention (2006-2008) // #mediaart #artnumérique

This installation seperates spaces and connects them back together through a smoke screen contained in a glassed wall. The density and dynamics of a mass of artificial fog is altered by computer controlled ventilators which are activated according to the movements and positions of the public on both sides.

The work was supported by the FQRSC, Interstices and CIAM. Thanks to Gisèle Trudel, Stéphane Beaudet for the electronics, Lynn Hughes & Jean Dubois (Interstices), Oboro and EAVM-UQAM.

317 prepared dc-motors, papper bags, shipping container
by Zimoun (2016) // #mediaart #soundart

317 prepared dc-motors, papper bags, shipping container
Zimoun 2016

On the occasion of Art Basel, Zimoun has been commissioned by Sennheiser to create a new immersive installation enclosed within an old shipping container. Lined with hundreds of paper bags—placed on the walls, floor, and ceiling of the container—each bag contains an engine, which moves it independently. Completely surrounded by a large number of small sound generation systems, the viewer is immersed in a three-dimensional sound composition.

Using simple and functional components, Zimoun builds architecturally-minded platforms of sound. Exploring mechanical rhythm and flow in prepared systems, his installations incorporate commonplace industrial objects. In an obsessive display of simple and functional materials, these works articulate a tension between the orderly patterns of Modernism and the chaotic forces of life. Carrying an emotional depth, the acoustic hum of natural phenomena in Zimoun's minimalist constructions effortlessly reverberates.

Real Artists Copy: An Conversation with Artist Nick Briz - by Chakka Reeves | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

New Media Artist and Educator Nick Briz has a perspective on copying, stealing and sharing on the web that all artists and creatives need to hear. Some of the topics we discussed in this episode include:  Why copying is our first tool as creators, how to be okay with the possibility of your work being copied, how to avoid appropriating cultures when copying and more.

I first became aware of Nick and his work a few years ago when I found his How/Why to Leave Facebook video on Youtube. It was a big factor in why I opted to deactivate my account almost three years ago. ...

Autonomous micro-device which distributes wi-fi masked as wireless network, visible at any gadget such as a smartphone or a laptop. The device is automatically renaming its network every 10 seconds, taking as its name various lines of poems by famous poets. The device is using an information channel which is accessible and visible to everyone through mobile devices, thus being a non-standard transmitter of poetry. There is no possibility to connect to this network (which is actually a dummy disconnected from Internet) - the message being the name of the network. If one would leave the wi-fi settings menu open, then gradually, line by line, all the poems programmed into the object will be revealed.

Nemo Observatorium - installation by Lawrence Malstaf // #mediaart #artnumerique

Styrofoam particles are blown around in a big transparent PVC cylinder by five strong fans. Visitors can take place on the armchair in the middle of the whirlpool or observe from the outside one at a time. On the chair, in the eye of the storm it is calm and safe. Spectacular at first sight, this installation turns out to mesmerise like a kind of meditation machine.

One can follow the seemingly cyclic patterns, focus on the different layers of 3D pixels or listen to its waterfall sound. One could call it a training device, challenging the visitor to stay centred and find peace in a fast changing environment. After a while the space seems to expand and one’s sense of time deludes.

Curtain (white) / 240 pairs white ear buds, 24 channel sound, acrylic, electronics... by Adam Basanta 2016 #soundart

The ubiquitous white earbud headphone creates an interior sonic environment into which one can retreat from the external world. Within this personalized sonic bubble, the headphones function as a visual “do not disturb” sign.

Curtain (white) plays on this notion by creating a 3m long “curtain” which sections the gallery space visually and sonically.
Patterns of white noise - a sound which masks surrounding sounds, often used in “sleep machines” - sweep across the curtain. Despite the synthetic production techniques, the sound mass evokes organic memories of waves, wind, rain, and insects.

Shrink, performance by Lawrence Malstaf (1995) // #mediaart

Two large, transparent plastic sheets and a device that gradually sucks the air out from between them leave the body (in this case the artist himself) vacuum-packed and vertically suspended. The transparent tube inserted between the two surfaces allows the person inside the installation to regulate the flow of air. As a result of the increasing pressure between the plastic sheets, the surface of the packed body gradually freezes into multiple micro-folds. For the duration of the performance the person inside moves slowly and changes positions, which vary from an almost embryonic position to one resembling a crucified body.

Ultrasound scratching on human bodies is a brand new music genre. Extremely personal and uncopyable. No one can hear anything, not even the performer-musician, the only one who enjoys the music is the listener.Audiopill is a functional prototype yet and simultaneously with its official introduction/exhibition opening on January 14, 2016, a crowdfunding campaign will start on indiegogo.com. If successful, anyone in the world will be able to make their dreams about exciting musical self-destruction come true.

Rechnender Raum (2016) - Inverted machineby Ralf Baecker @ Kasseler Kunstverein

video documentation of Rechnender Raum. The installation is on display at Kasseler Kunstverein.

Rechnender Raum (Computing Space) is a light-weight sculpture, constructed from sticks, strings and little plumbs. At the same time it is a full functional logic exact neural network (*). Through its strict geometric and otherwise very filigree construction, the observer is able to track the whole processing logic from every viewpoint around the machine. This disclosure of the machines core is enforced by an uncommon distribution of its constructing elements: a nine angled architectural body forms a torus. In contrast to an ordinary alignment of a hidden logic and an outer user facing display its geometric basis is turned inside-out. The core of the machine, with all its computing elements, is shifted outwards on the surface, while the “display” which indicates the results of the tasks is displaced into the center of the system. Even though the tasks and their logic runs directly in front of the viewers eyes and even if one is long sinking into the interaction of the elements which is accompanied by a polyphonic but steady and reassuring buzz, it is not possible to follow the succession of the single conditions of the machine. On one hand by turning the machine inside-out its function is completly transparent, on the other hand a strict self-referentiality and ignorance to the viewer is realized. The machine turns away from the visitor and carries out its computations only for itself. Without depending on interaction or requesting it, it goes through its own states endlessly. The results of the computations are sent inwards -into its own center- they are not intended for the viewer. So an interesting paradox appears: while the machine opens up everything it closes it at the same time, as if it has a secret.

INFINITE_A4 - Audiovisual Installation by Miao Jing & Liu Chang (sound by Gan Jian)

Visual art and sound art are always regarded as different artistic forms, but visual sense and auditory sense are important and closely-related sensory experience of human being. Therefore, more and more artists begin to explore a new artistic form which can connect visual sense with auditory sense. An immersive audiovisual performance integrating visual elements and sound is created by three young artists Miao Jing, Liu Chang and Gan Jian. The digital technology and experimental audio elements are applied to integrate their thoughts concerning “Time, Space and Memory” into this work. Composed of digital figures, their Audiovisual Installation is simple, cold, delicate and filled with the change of lights and shadows. Many “manufactured landscapes” like urban buildings, neon lights and giant landscapes are implied in this work, which makes people reflect the rapid development of industry, science and technology in urban areas and rethink the urban consumerism. Meanwhile, people can experience the poetic beauty of manufactured landscapes.
