OpenDrop is a new design for an open source digital microfludics platform for research purposes. The device uses recent electro-wetting technology to control small droplets of liquids. Potential applications are lab on a chip devices for automating processes of digital biology. How ever the present design should also open the technology to other field and allow experimentation to find new applications. Including the field of art, music, games and education.

 

The design approach chosen relies strongly on Do-It-Your-Self (DIY) and Low-Cost. To aim is to only use standard and widely-available components, materials, and production processes. We try to avoid parts that aren’t available to individual customers or processes that require expensive setup costs. Also all design files and software required to operate your hardware are shared under open licenses.

Des chercheurs de Microsoft proposent de mettre au point des outils de débogage qui anticipent sur les erreurs réalisées par les développeurs, en analysant leur état d'esprit au moment de la rédaction du code source, grâce à la biométrie.

 

Faudra-t-il bientôt que les développeurs portent sur eux un ensemble de capteurs biométriques, pour permettre à leur employeur d'optimiser les ressources humaines ? Des chercheurs de Microsoft ont publié le mois dernier une étude (.pdf)intitulée "Utiliser des mesures psycho-physiologiques pour évaluer la difficulté d'une tâche dans le développement de logiciels", dans laquelle ils détaillent les résultats d'une expérience menée pour déterminer les endroits du code qui sont le plus susceptibles de contenir des bugs ou des erreurs de stratégie d'approche.

We present the alpha version of Terrapattern: "similar-image search" for satellite photos. It's an open-source tool for discovering "patterns of interest" in unlabeled satellite imagery—a prototype for exploring the unmapped, and the unmappable.

 

Terrapattern provides an open-ended interface for visual query-by-example. Simply click an interesting spot on Terrapattern's map, and it will find other locations that look similar. Our tool is ideal for locating specialized 'nonbuilding structures' and other forms of soft infrastructure that aren't usually indicated on maps.

There has never been a more exciting time to observe human activity and understand the patterns of humanity’s impact on the world. We aim to help people discover such patterns in satellite imagery, with the help of deep learning machine vision techniques.

FaceDirector: Continuous Control of Facial Performance in Video

We present a method to continuously blend between multiple facial performances of an actor, which can contain different facial expressions or emotional states. As an example, given sad and angry video takes of a scene, our method empowers a movie director to specify arbitrary weighted combinations and smooth transitions between the two takes in post-production. Our contributions include (1) a robust nonlinear audio-visual synchronization technique that exploits complementary properties of audio and visual cues to automatically determine robust, dense spatio-temporal correspondences between takes, and (2) a seamless facial blending approach that provides the director full control to interpolate timing, facial expression, and local appearance, in order to generate novel performances after filming. In contrast to most previous works, our approach operates entirely in image space, avoiding the need of 3D facial reconstruction. We demonstrate that our method can synthesize visually believable performances with applications in emotion transition, performance correction, and timing control.

Quand on observe une toile de grand maître, on pense évidemment au temps nécessaire à sa réalisation. Pour arriver à créer un chef-d’œuvre, il faut des années d’apprentissage, de créations, de tentatives, de ratés. Le public donne donc une valeur particulière au travail du peintre et continuera de l’admirer et de le protéger pendant des centaines d’années...

We looked for tiny, autonomous, easy to connect to, and 9 Degrees of Freedom IMU, but none of the available wireless motion sensors were affordable enough to really unlock creativity, so we built one.
In a few points, here are the specs:
  • 9 DoF with on-board sensor fusion (more explanation below)
  • Easy to connect with BLE: good for computer + smartphone + tablet connection possible (lower power than WiFi)
  • Compact & autonomous: Embeds a CR2032 battery holder (available in any corner shops, gas stations…)
  • Size of a coin cell battery!

This story began with a simple question: if a facial recognition system processes a lot of pictures of a child, will it recognize that person when he or she grows up?


If I were to upload all my childhood photos to Facebook (or some future Facebook), could a biometric identification system link the button-nosed, round-cheeked child with a bowl cut to my adult face, which has lost its button, cheeks, and hair? 


It's not an idle question: parents are posting millions of photos of their children to social networking sites, as are kids themselves when they are old enough to use Facebook and the like. Will these photos permanently identify them as they grow older, linking their childhood or teenage antics to their adult identities? 


Or does the natural aging process provide some level of protection from the prying computations of facial recognition algorithms? If I can barely identify myself in photos from my childhood, what hope does a computer have?

This electronic circuit simulator is highly interactive giving the feeling of playing with real components. It's very helpful for experimentation and visualization. Best of all, thanks to the power of HTML5, no plug-ins are required! The original implementation, in Java, belongs to Paul Falstad who kindly gave his permission for me to build this port.

How to use this


When the simulator starts up you will see an animated schematic of a simple LRC circuit. The green colour indicates positive voltage. The grey colour indicates ground. A red colour indicates negative voltage. The moving yellow dots indicate current.


To turn a switch on or off, just click on it. If you move the mouse over any component of the circuit, you will see a short description of that component and its current state in the lower right corner of the window. To modify a component, move the mouse over it, click the right mouse button (or control-click if you have a Mac) and select "Edit". You can also access the edit function by double-clicking on a component....
