Inside The #DarkWeb - Documentary (2014)

Twenty-five years after the World Wide Web was created, the issue of surveillance has become the greatest controversy of its existence.

With many concerned that governments and corporations can monitor people's every move, this programme meets hackers and scientists who are using technology to fight back, as well as the law enforcement officers who believe it's leading to opportunities for risk-free crimes.

With contributors including World Wide Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee and WikiLeaks co-founder Julian Assange.

#Hacking, The Art of Exploitation | by Jon Erickson - No Starch Press (2nd Edition - 2008) | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Hacking is the art of creative problem solving, whether that means finding an unconventional solution to a difficult problem or exploiting holes in sloppy programming. Many people call themselves hackers, but few have the strong technical foundation needed to really push the envelope.

Rather than merely showing how to run existing exploits, author Jon Erickson explains how arcane hacking techniques actually work. To share the art and science of hacking in a way that is accessible to everyone, Hacking: The Art of Exploitation, 2nd Edition introduces the fundamentals of C programming from a hacker's perspective.

The included LiveCD provides a complete Linux programming and debugging environment—all without modifying your current operating system. Use it to follow along with the book's examples as you fill gaps in your knowledge and explore hacking techniques on your own. Get your hands dirty debugging code, overflowing buffers, hijacking network communications, bypassing protections, exploiting cryptographic weaknesses, and perhaps even inventing new exploits...

His intervention at the closing conference of Transmediale left a bit hungry for more. For Makery, McKenzie Wark, the author of ‘A Hacker Manifesto’ and ‘Gamer Theory’, tells us more on his hacktivist theory for the anthropocene.

“There is something about the internet that isn’t working anymore,” is the line that opens filmmaker Jonathan Minard’s short documentary on Deep Lab—a group of women hackers, artists, and theorists who gathered at Carnegie Mellon University in December to answer the question of what, exactly, that disquieting “something” is. The film premieres on Motherboard today.

What Deep Lab represents is just as hard to pin down as the “something” invoked in the opening minutes of Minard’s short film. Is it a book, a lecture series, or Minard’s documentary—all of which were put together in under a month? Is it an ethos? Is it feminist? Is Deep Lab a charrette, a dugnad, or a “congress,” as its participants called it?

Appropriating Interaction Technologies - Course by Kyle McDonald & Lauren McCarthy

Appropriating Interaction Technologies - Course by Kyle McDonald & Lauren McCarthy | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

This course explores the structures and systems of social interactions, identity, and self representation as mediated by technology. We will investigate ways that technology can be used to augment, subvert, alter, mediate, and ultimately deepen interaction in a lasting way.

How do the things we build and use limit and expand the way we understand and relate to each other? We'll explore this question by building new tools and creating new situations for breaking us out of existing patterns, and discussing contextual examples from media art, performance art, psychology and pop culture. Technologies explored will include computer vision (face/body/eye tracking with openFrameworks), data representation and glitch, browser extensions and plugins (in Chrome), computer security, mobile platforms, and social automation and APIs (Facebook, Twitter, Mechanical Turk).

Students will develop projects that alter or disrupt social space in an attempt to reveal existing patterns or truths about our experiences and technologies, and possibilities for richer interactions. Different tactics for intervention and performance will be explored, first through a set of short prompts or experiments, and then through a larger, more thorough intervention.

Non conventional art, communication guerrilla, radical entertainment.

Presentations, screenings, workshops and action
At the Center of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona

The Influencers explores controversial forms of art and communication guerrilla, presenting independent projects that play with global popular culture, infiltrate the mass media, and transform fashions, consumption and technological fetishism.

The key to The Influencers is found in its guests and stories: impostors, pseudo-totalitarian musicians, conceptual hackers, deviant geographers, anarchitects and actors from invisible theatre. In these three days they are going to present their work, show known and less known material and speak with the public about challenges, goals and strategies.

With The Influencers, the border between disciplines is erased (since the message really is the message, and the medium is just a tactic), links between apparently distant projects are found, and bold genealogies are drawn between different countries and generations. Ambiguities are also explored and contradictions are discussed. In the manipulation of everyday symbols, as well as within what is excessive and politically incorrect, we will possibly find inspiration for changing the present and imagining the future.

The Influencers is curated by Bani Brusadin, Franco and Eva Mattes from 0100101110101101.

You've probably read dozens of paragraphs on how the next great theater of war will be online rather than offline, and how China and the US are already battling each other for cyber supremacy. The truth is, though, unless you've actually been hacked, it's hard to appreciate just how real the prospect of cyberwar actually is. Now, though, a security company has produced a fascinating geographic map that shows you hacking attempts in real-time -- and sure enough, you really can see China waging cyberwar against the US.

One man’s quest to #biohack his body for better #sex

One man’s quest to #biohack his body for better #sex | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Since the dawn of time—or at the very least, since the early days of Cosmopolitan—we’ve been preoccupied with the question of whether we’re good in bed. There’s no shortage of surgical or pharmaceutical options available to make us harder, better, faster, and stronger. More recently, we’ve even started using sex-tracking apps, so we can record every thrust and whimper between the sheets.

But all of these hacks we employ to improve our sex lives have the disadvantage of being relatively impermanent. No matter how many pills we pop, sex toys we buy, or Tantra workshops we take, there’s no way for us to permanently hack our own bodies to become the sleek, ultra-libidinous pleasure machines some of us so desperately want to be.

Rich Lee, a 32-year-old salesman from St. George, Utah, thinks he’s found the solution to this problem. He calls it the Lovetron9000, and it’s an implant embedded underneath the male pubic bone that causes the penis to vibrate. His goal, he told me during a phone conversation a few weeks ago, is to “turn your boyfriend into a vibrator.”

When Kinect, Microsoft’s latest add-on for the Xbox 360 game console, was released worldwide in November 2010, it was the beginning of a success story, but not in the way Microsoft may have been expecting.

The peripheral, which uses a camera and motion-capture software to allow for gaming without the use of an actual controller, has been like a flame to a moth for hackers. Consequently it wasn’t long before the potential of the system beyond gaming was being explored.

To the joy of the independant programmer community worldwide, only a week after the Kinect’s release, a hacker named Hector Martin developed an open-source driver that gets hold of the camera data so that anybody can experiment with the camera freely.

Following last week's raid on The Pirate Bay many sites appeared claiming to have brought the site back to life. While that was to be expected, the site that has gained the most traction is now deliberately lying to the press and faking user uploads to give the impression that leading uploaders support them.

The Pirate Bay was without doubt the most iconic BitTorrent site in history before it was abruptly shutdown last week following a raid on a Swedish datacenter.

Even today it seems strange talking about The Pirate Bay in the past tense. Many believe it’s simply a question of time before the site reappears but for others any amount of time is too long to wait. ...

The Random Darknet Shopper is an automated online shopping bot which we provide with a budget of $100 in Bitcoins per week. Once a week the bot goes on shopping spree in the deep web where it randomly choses and purchases one item and has it mailed to us. The items are shown in the exhibition «The Darknet. From Memes to Onionland» at Kunst Halle St. Gallen. Each new object ads to a landscape of traded goods from the Darknet.

The Random Darknet Shopper is a live Mail Art piece, an exploration of the deep web via the goods traded there. It directly connects the Darknet with the art space (exhibition space). By randomizing our consumerism, we are guaranteed a wide selection of goods from the over 16'000 listed on Agora market place.

Of all my Anonymous subjects, I was closest to the defiant Sabu. Turns out he was closer with the FBI.

For six years I have been studying the protest ensemble Anonymous. Some challenges come with the job. By definition, Anonymous is a faceless collective. As many participants in this milieu conceal their identities carefully, it was impossible to tell who lay behind the mask.

Nevertheless, since most Anons engaged with each other using pseudonymous nicknames, I interacted with a stable cast of characters on the chat channels where I did the great bulk of my ethnographic research on Anonymous. People developed reputations, and their personalities and linguistic idiosyncrasies shone through their text-based conversations.

But Sabu was unique. ...

Art Hack Day - Disnovate - AUGUST 28-30, 2014 - Paris | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

"Disnovate" is a collaboration between Art Hack Day, Parsons Paris and Accès(s) festival. Between August 28-30, artists and hackers will inhabit Parsons Paris to create a flash exhibit on the theme "Disnovate”, in anticipation of the next Accès(s) festival in Pau.

Disruptive innovation is widely heralded as the driving force of progress, influencing all walks of life. Its vocabulary has seeped into domains as disparate as politics, education, or art. Computer culture is not immune: Hackathons have turned into rallies for smarter, cheaper and faster consumption.

What role does the whimsical and useless play in this society? Can we evaluate creation without resorting to conceptions of value? What worldview is implied by the language of disruption; what does it clarify and what does it obscure? As artists we have an urge to break with the past and embrace novelty, ignoring the pioneers of our field. As hackers we reap the benefits of scientific breakthroughs, oblivious to its military-industrial foundation. Are we the apostles of a broader ideology of innovation?

Anonymous: From the Lulz to Collective Action | by Gabriella Coleman | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Taken as a whole, Anonymous resists straightforward definition as it is a name currently called into being to coordinate a range of disconnected actions, from trolling to political protests.1 Originally a name used to coordinate Internet pranks, in the winter of 2008 some wings of Anonymous also became political, focusing on protesting the abuses of the Church of Scientology. By September 2010 another distinct political arm emerged as Operation Payback and did so to protest the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), and a few months later this arm shifted its energies to Wikileaks, as did much of the world's attention. It was this manifestation of Anonymous that garnered substantial media coverage due the spectacular waves of distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks they launched (against PayPal and Mastercard in support of Wikileaks). Despite this notoriety and despite the fact that Anonymous had already coordinated protests against the Church of Scientology, commentators struggled to describe its ethics, sociology, and history using traditional analytical categories.
