Over the last few years, we experience a culture of excess where on one hand the overabundance of information has generated a wave of passive consumption and on the other has allowed many previously unseen trends and voices to emerge. Today, Pop may be as well defined by likes, shares, tweets, views or followers showing in a way the power of the people to decide about trends and attitudes but also highlighting the ephemerality of it, as the culture around us is changing at high speed. In that sense, we might as well say that what is considered Pop in 2015 might be outdated in 2016 and so on...

The Wrong Biennial: Digital Art Gets Real - by Benjamin Hunter /// #mediaart #netart | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

In a world of drone wedding videos, personalized retargeting ads, YouTube celebritydom and Edward Snowden, the digital is undeniably ubiquitous. Our mental peripheries and dreams, once the dumping ground of real-life daily stresses, are now littered with the memories of ill-advised Snapchats, externalized Instagram personalities and rejected Facebook friendship requests. Art has held a stake in the digital realm for some time—even before the 1980s when Andy Warhol made computer art on his Commodore Amiga home PC. But the last few years have seen a shift in the modalities of contemporary artwork and the establishment of artist communities based solely in the production of art interested in analyzing and critiquing our digital world. A new generation of artists has grown up at a time when media piracy and appropriation are commonplace, and they struggle to gain attention within an intensely saturated global information matrix. While digital art attempts to marry its democratic origins with a desire for legitimacy, a new art biennial has been quietly making waves within the scene, and putting forth challenges to a still-hesitant art establishment.

The 9th edition of the Bains numeriques biennial takes part in the 350th anniversary of the Academy of Science and proposes a crossing in the nearby worlds of art and sciences.

During the biennial, Enghien-les-Bains becomes a city where various artistic and scientific visions and imaginations merge. Once more, the biennial attempts to offer to its visitors a path of installations, exhibitions, live performances and concerts all through the city: lake, streets, squares and station. From places of the daily life revisited, the public will be transported in new living areas and venues.

Increased reality, imaginary mappings, immersive spaces, the works presented during these 5 days proposes us new perceptive paradigms. Our representation is modified, that of our body at first, then of the city and the world. By moving the physical marks, immersing in a mental space and experimenting new sensory strategies, the proposed artistic performances will be in connection with the scientific imagination, in particular that of the cognitive sciences..

moderated by Panayotis Antoniadis, Daphne Dragona, James Stevens

The choice to go “off the cloud” stems from current disillusionment with networked connectivity, reaching instead for the potential of emerging user-owned and user-controlled infrastructures. Over the last decade a growing scene of artists, hackers, and network practitioners has been actively working on creating community networks, ad-hoc connectivity, and autonomous systems of sensing and data collecting. But how feasible are the changes these groups want to see? Following last year’s offline networks unite! panel at transmediale and several specially organised workshops, Off-the-Cloud Zone brings together various actors to discuss the challenges, barriers, and possibilities of the field. With open conversation formats and hands-on demonstrations, the event seeks new strategies of joining forces and building common tools to take users beyond the sovereignty of the cloud.

“In that Empire, the Art of Cartography attained such Perfection that the map of a single Province occupied the entirety of a City, and the map of the Empire, the entirety of a Province. In time, those Unconscionable Maps no longer satisfied, and the Cartographers Guilds struck a Map of the Empire whose size was that of the Empire, and which coincided point for point with it. The following Generations, who were not so fond of the Study of Cartography as their Forebears had been, saw that that vast map was Useless, and not without some Pitilessness was it, that they delivered it up to the Inclemencies of Sun and Winters. In the Deserts of the West, still today, there are Tattered Ruins of that Map, inhabited by Animals and Beggars; in all the Land there is no other Relic of the Disciplines of Geography.” - Jorge Luis Borges, “On Exactitude in Science”

"(in)exactitude in science" is an online exhibition curated by Kamilia Kard and Filippo Lorenzin about the relationship of dependency between the (non-digital) element and its (digital) rendering which becomes independent and that at some point takes even its place. We are in a post-indexing era: the Web is the 1:1 scale representation of the real world, it exceeded that level of detail becoming a structure aside, now that is not influenced by the real data which in turn influences it.

#CALL | HTMLLES #Festival 2016 - Terms of privacy /// #artcall #mediaart #artnumerique | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it
deadline: January 4, 2016

Since 1997, The HTMlles has brought together artists, scholars, and activists passionate about critically engaging new technologies from a feminist perspective. The festival takes place biannually in Montreal, and its aim is to showcase cutting-edge projects produced by local and international artists. Each edition focuses on a specific theme and addresses urgent socio-political questions by pushing the boundaries of artistic and feminist practices.

The 12th edition of the festival will coincide with the 20th anniversary of Studio XX! To celebrate such a collective accomplishment, we launch our open call for proposals to local and international artists so that, together, we can continue to enact creative and critical feminist interventions in media arts and digital culture.

THEME : TERMS OF PRIVACY

Current discussions around privacy are shaped by the role new technologies play in enabling modern forms of individual, corporate, and state surveillance. In 2013, Edward Snowden revealed that the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) operates numerous global surveillance programs targeting governments, corporations, and civilians in the United States and abroad, and thus what everyone suspected became official: that we—tech consumers—are watched, listened to, traced, and monitored in real time via our gadgets and personal computers. As we speak or type, programs of mass surveillance gather our personal data and mega-data. Further, Snowden's leaked classified information revealed that the problem goes beyond the NSA, linking Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United States and the United Kingdom in an intelligence alliance known as the “five-eyes”...
