Illuminating the ‘Dark’ Web and Content Monitoring, Eva and Franco Mattes // by Tes Loos > New York Times | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Plenty of artists have explored the relationship between light and shadow to create indelible images and tell a story.

Eva and Franco Mattes — married Brooklyn artists and “hacktivists” — use those ideas metaphorically, peeling back the surface of what they call the “sanitized” internet to reveal its murkier side: the world of content monitoring and the elusive individuals who are tasked with tracking and removing offensive material online.

Their latest exhibition, “Abuse Standards Violations,” on view at London’s Carroll/Fletcher gallery until Aug. 27, is a journey into what Ben Vickers, a London curator at the Serpentine Galleries and fan of their work, called “the dark, morbid heart of the internet.”

EEC / UTOPIAS (of expanded city) - 13 May – 3 July, 2016<br/>WRO Art Center | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

The UTOPIAS exhibition dwells on a transition the collective imaginary made at the turn of the 20th century, abandoning the notion of development as conquest and embracing scenarios of integrated future. The concepts of time and space transform, the Europe-centric world map morphs, and artists show fullness in place of emptiness, like in ancient Asian cosmologies. In artistic renderings, the ecosystem is inhabited by multiple, not only human, beings; animate and inanimate nature is no longer merely a resource of raw materials. The exhibition addresses the various ways in which arts explore the quest for sustainability and gestures at the art-showcased processes in which humans develop new understandings of their place in and relevance to the world as only one of its several components.

Digital art, in its countless manifestations, has become a household word in creative production; its cultural relevance is unquestioned. But its conservation does present new challenges to museums and collections alike: After all, we are not talking about static objects that can be “stabilized” in the classical sense; rather, digital art is akin to performance, because new conditions can arise in each process or each performance. What can be done if the technology is already out of date the moment you switch on the computer? How do we deal with works of art that are dependent on proprietary software that’s no longer being updated by its manufacturers, or whose manufacturer no longer exists? How can net-based projects be preserved for the future?

Y a-t-il des différences entre les hackeurs ?  Comment fait-on cohabiter un monde de règles, de pare-feu et de lois, et ceux qui les contournent ? Peut-on désormais faire profession de hacker?

16.06.2016 - #Book Lauch event - Robots & Art – Exploring an Unlikely Symbiosis / Damith Herath, Christian Kroos, Stelarc | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

The first compendium on robotic art of its kind, this book explores the integration of robots into human society and our attitudes, fears and hopes in a world shared with autonomous machines. It raises questions about the benefits, risks and ethics of the transformative changes to society that are the consequence of robots taking on new roles alongside humans. It takes the reader on a journey into the world of the strange, the beautiful, the uncanny and the daring – and into the minds and works of some of the world’s most prolific creators of robotic art.

Offering an in-depth look at robotic art from the viewpoints of artists, engineers and scientists, it presents outstanding works of contemporary robotic art and brings together for the first time some of the most influential artists in this area in the last three decades. Starting from a historical review, this transdisciplinary work explores the nexus between robotic research and the arts and examines the diversity of robotic art, the encounter with robotic otherness, machine embodiment and human–robot interaction. Stories of difficulties, pitfalls and successes are recalled, characterising the multifaceted collaborations across the diverse disciplines required to create robotic art.

Waste(d)! #festival | Art Meets Radical Openness - 25.05-28.05.2016 // #hacktivism #openculture #mediaart | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

The event is rooted in the successful Free Software movement of the early 2000s. In conjunction with the Austrian-wide initiative Linux Weeks, servus.at was a co-organizer from the beginning with an event in Linz (LiWoLi – “Linux Weeks Linz”)

The cultural, artistic and socio-political focus of the association, which is still marked by the spirit of the Free Software movement, has been systematically expanded with a new cooperation with the Institute for Time-Based Media (Art University Linz) beginning in 2008. Social, societal and political aspects arising from the pervasion of technology in everyday life are shifted into the foreground.

Consequent to a local development, the term “freedom” has been transferred in this context to culture and art, thus engendering a new title: Art Meets Radical Openness.

Art Meets Radical Openness

Festival dedicated to Art, Hacktivism and Open Culture

“Art Meets Radical Openness” is a community festival, an open lab, and a meeting point for artists, developers, hactivists, and idealists involved with the culture of sharing and communal production. They are catalysts that spark new discourses and open up new directions of thinking. Free Open Source Software, open tools in general and the use of free licenses are the precondition and basis for the digital practice of a community like this, which impels social transformation. This tangible transformation goes beyond a digital practice and also changes our real life.

Sounding City is an annual exhibition that explores sound art and the boundaries between art, sound and music. The various installations bring together the three different disciplines. Tangible sound. Audible image. Sound of Silence focuses on quiet or barely audible sound work by sound artists. There is increased attention for silence in our society. In the bustle of today’s city, there is more than ever a need for quietude. Yet silence is also the benchmark against which sound is measured. No matter how paradoxical it may sound: silence and sound cannot exist without one another. Many sound artists share this fascination and create installations on the fringes of the audible. As a reflection on sound or as an invitation to more intense listening. Sound of Silence mixes works of both Flemish and internationally renowned artists, and starts with an opening performance and a concert on the same theme.
