Direction artistique : Claire Bardainne & Adrien Mondot

With the help of the PEEK augmented reality app, Vince McKelvie's wild digital sculptures made a permanent pitstop in Pittsburgh.

Even though the abandoned department store on the first level of Pittsburgh’s Union Trust Building was empty, digital artist Vince McKelvie’s reality-bending creations (which we've previously covered here) were, in a way, everywhere. At this year’s arts and music VIA Festival, the department store-turned digital art gallery was one of several locations where McKelvie’s work was able to hide in plain sight thanks to PEEK, an augmented reality app. ...

This is the First Artwork in the World to Use Google Glass by David Datuna

This is the First Artwork in the World to Use Google Glass by David Datuna | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

There's a lot of interesting facts about this art piece by David Datuna. Called Portrait of America, it's a 12-foot American flag sculpture made up of about 2,000 eyeglass lenses as well as 400 or so famous portraits that either magnify or shrink underneath them. These embedded images include historical and contemporary figures who've helped shape America into what it is today. You have George Washington, John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr. as well as Lady Gaga, Steve Jobs and Michael Jackson. "It's about people who really created this country. It's about people who wanted to change this country, build this country," Datuna said. "I want to show the American culture, the American journey." But, of course, that's not the most interesting part. Slip on a pair of Google Glasses on hand and watch how this piece turns into, what the artist calls, a "living organism." ...

Jaron Lanier is probably best known as a pioneer of Virtual Reality technology but is probably best described as a modern Renaissance man--an eclectic mix of computer programmer, inventor, musician, artist and futurist. He divides his time between California and New York (where he has positions as a visiting scholar at Columbia University and as a visiting artist at New York University), but he can always be found in cyberspace.

Scientific American editor Corey S. Powell caught up with Jaron Lanier in the summer of 1996, to hear some of his current thoughts on the World Wide Web, synthetic worlds and other silicon dreams. ....

▶ Thermal Touch by metaio - A New Augmented Reality Interface for Wearables - YouTube

Thermal Touch is a vision of the near future for wearable computing user interfaces. By fusing information from an infrared and standard camera, nearly any surface can be transformed into a touch screen.

"Everyone is talking about wearable computing eyewear like Google Glass," said Metaio CTO Peter Meier, "but no one is talking about the best way to actually use those devices. We need natural, convenient interface to navigate the technology of tomorrow, and that's why we developed 'Thermal Touch'."

Consisting of an infrared and standard camera working in tandem and running on a tablet PC, the prototype registers the heat signature left by a person's finger when touching a surface. Metaio's AR software then supplements the experience with AR and computer vision to allow the user to interact with digital content in all-new tactile way.

Gravity - 3D Sketching - tool for creatives to quickly sketch their ideas in 3D space

More info on http://www.gravitysketch.com

A pen and a pad specifically designed for sketching in the augmented environment. Free from any screen or computer, Gravity allows you to focus on what really matters, developing your ideas in an intuitive way.

As you start to draw, objects will take shape in front of you. Through the landing pad controls, you can adjust the plane in which you sketch, giving volume to your creation. With augmented reality glasses, Gravity reinvents how you and your collaborators visualize and contribute to each other’s ideas.

The project started with a strong belief: the tools that are commonly used for drawing, designing and making things in 3D limit people’s ability to bring their ideas to reality. Through numerous prototypes, tests and iterations, we created Gravity as a simple and engaging tool that will shape a new wave of 3D creation.
