Contemporary Art exhibited at Art Basel of Miami
While I was still an undergraduate I was lucky enough to go to Art Basel Miami two years in a row. While there and being so young I didn't quite grasp and understand the art on display. This scoop.it will help me sort through contemporary art and discover what I like about it. In the past I have not been as drawn to contemporary art as I have been to Art History. Hopefully searching through the artist who exhibit at one of the largest shows on the planet I'll be able to wrap my head around contemporary art.

Damien Hirst

Damien Hirst
Alexa Rae's insight:

Damien Hirst has a variety of artwork that uses a lot of different media. Some of the first images I saw of his work where of a shark in a tank and then I kept looking and found a lot of work where animals and things were contained in these tank like spaces. Some belonged in water like the shakr and some didn't. I found a little confusing. After a little furthur reading I found that much of his work deals with death and that is the meaning of the animals in the tanks that are preserved in formaldehyde.

Artist page for Todd James. Includes biography, selected works, press, associated exhibitions, and associated publications.
Alexa Rae's insight:

Todd James is a self taught artist who lives and works in New York City. I found some of his work interesting because of the way he uses bright colors and shapes, they remind me of a Matisse. Some of his work is religious commentary and I'm not sure how I feel about that. In his younger years he started with public art in subways and has created the covers to several well known music albums.

"push" neon, plex and enamel paint 2012

Alexa Rae's insight:

I think I'm seeing a trend here. Maybe I'm just attracted to the neon light quality. I think that this piece is interesting it could just be because of Emin and Birnbaum that it caught my eye. Patrick Martinez creates this from neon, plex and enamel paint. In his artist statement he says he focuses on the phenomonology of his surroundings and creates beauty in things that wouldn't normally be considered beautiful. More information on him can be found at http://patrickmartinez.com/art.html ;

Check out http://brentbirnbaum.com!
Alexa Rae's insight:

Continuing on with neon lighting, I found this gem. Brent Birnbaum created this piece that blinks back and forth between "I hate you" and "I ate you". I thought that it was a funny and more lighthearted pieces compared to the personal revelations of Tracey Emin. In Birnbaum's artist statement he states that he works to reengage the viewer with popular culture from a critical and unexpected direction. I personally just find the humor in it.

I Went to Art Basel and Tried to "Get" Art | VICE United States **EXPLICIT**

I Went to Art Basel and Tried to "Get" Art | VICE United States **EXPLICIT** | Contemporary Art exhibited at Art Basel of Miami | Scoop.it

A while ago, I wrote a thing about how I don't "get" art. In the piece, I dared to suggest that maybe it was silly that a neon sign that says "my cunt is wet with fear" is worth $100,000.

Alexa Rae's insight:

Please be warned, this article is explicit and uses some vulgar language. However, I included it because my first time at Art Basel I thought much of the same about the artwork. There were many cool pieces and then there was the sculpture of dildos that were tied in a giant knot that when a light was cast on them the shadow was the head of George Washington. It really made me question contemporary art and what it was and what counted as art. So I was just googling around and found this, I dont feel as strongly as the writer. I do however think he made some good points and there is a fair amount of images in here that make you think WHAT?!?

oh and I do own the tank top at the end that says F*UCK|Art Fairs.

Alexa Rae's insight:

Carlos Cruz-Diez creates art that almost looks like it is vibraing, he does this by organizing his artwork in different levels. This work in particular was made in 2007 using color silkscreen. He has worked in many mediums including plexiglass, painting and silk screening.

David Horvitz "The Distance of a Day"

David Horvitz "The Distance of a Day" | Contemporary Art exhibited at Art Basel of Miami | Scoop.it
Alexa Rae's insight:

This piece of art not only shows the beauty of a sun setting and rising but also has a familial connection. Horvitz and his mother were able to create a video of the sun rising in one part of the world and rising in another but still watching the same sun made them feel closer together than the thousands of miles that separated them. These videos were captured with an iPhone and are displayed side by side.

BarbaraKruger.com is a tribute to Barbara Kruger, the American collage artist famous for her layered photographs. This site contains a store and shop, as well as many links of interest.
Alexa Rae's insight:

What caught my eye about this art work is the way she incorporates words. The use of words has been slightly prevalent in the works I've chosen for my scoop.it. I feel that she does so in a meaningful way that acts as social commentary. I really like her large pieces, especially the one that says Money makes Money. To me it represents our social state of the poorer staying poorer and those who have money just keep making more.

Zevs, Ye$, De Buck Gallery

Zevs, Ye$, De Buck Gallery | Contemporary Art exhibited at Art Basel of Miami | Scoop.it
Alexa Rae's insight:

This image is from Art Basel the link is to the gallery with Zevs work. I found this piece interesting because of its social commentrart on money. All the letters are symbols for money and the actual work is stainless steal that has been gold plated. The actual piece cost $120,000 to make. The irony of making a piece about money and it costing a lot is glorious. I think this was an interesting play on our culture of money. Zevs uses this stylized dripping melting look in a lot of his artwork which also takes symbols from popular culture like the Nike and Louis Vitton Logo.

Sarah Ashley Longshore- Me So Horny, 2012

Sarah Ashley Longshore- Me So Horny, 2012 | Contemporary Art exhibited at Art Basel of Miami | Scoop.it
Alexa Rae's insight:

Sarah Ashley Longshore is a pop artist painter who comments on popular culture and society through her Andy Warhol like work. A look through her gallery of paintings will have you shocked and laughing at the way she pokes fun at celebrities and her social commentary through art. At first they seem just funny but as you start to look through the paintings she makes good points on today's culture of money, greed, social status and more. For all the riduclous art I've found in my collection of contemporary art I can actually say I GET THIS. "Me so horny" is an interesting piece where the woman is plugged in, as many of us are today, and her designer glasses show the reflection of what I'm sure are way too expensive shoes. These paintings are fun and funny but make serious the issues of popular culture today.

高松和樹のホームページ Kazuki Takamatsu HP
Alexa Rae's insight:

Kazuki Takamatsu creates visually stimulating images through computer imaging and traditional painting techniques. I was really drawn to this particular image because of the juxtaposition of the gun to the young girl. This one made me thing, which is more than I can saw for a lot of the other pieces I've found on exhibition at Art Basel. This made me question the fragility of childhood in other countries (and many times ours) when guns and violence are present in their every day lives. Takamatsu creates these like depth maps, making them a little eerie and abstract. The girl's expression is one to think about as well.

The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami is a collecting museum located in the heart of downtown North Miami, Florida. MoCA offers visitors both temporary exhibitions and exhibitions of its collection.
Alexa Rae's insight:

Tracey Emin's neon lights piqued my interest when I opened up the Art Basel site. Since then she has also had work displayed in Times Square. Her neon lights are her personal expressions in her handwriting then converted to a neon sign. She reveals emotional confessions through this artwork and it has played a large role in her development as an artist.

Alexa Rae's insight:

Sodi's work of massive textural paintings caught my eye because of their abstract quality. According to the PACE gallery site he leaves many of his paintings untitled so that you aren't automatically tied to a common thought. I like that this is meant to have indivudual interpretations.
