May 2017 Opinion JJ Charlesworth Documenta / Opinion / ArtReview | art move | Scoop.it

That particular elephant in the room of Documenta should be evidence enough that ‘large international exhibitions’ are not good places to pretend to do politics, since the autocracy of such institutions is by definition incapable of accommodating the democratic participation of local art scenes artists or publics, of truly representing and experiences of those they claim to engage with.

Elise Atangana's insight:
J.J. Charlesworth argues that Documenta’s top-down structure echoes Greece’s fraught relationship with the EU. Via Moses Serubiri

Elise Atangana's insight:
LET’S SAY YOU LIVE IN TWO DIFFERENT PLACES. Maybe you were born in one city and live in another. One is cold, orderly, efficient, and peaceful; the other is hot, chaotic, wildly corrupt, and untenable. You endlessly set them in dialogue, sure that something meaningful will be made from the echo back and forth, the jagged path, and the way you move between them. If you’re lucky, your exile is of your own choosing. You haven’t been forced out by war, disaster, or economic collapse. But in that case, you have temptations to avoid (exoticism, exploitation) and tricky questions to answer. Who are you to live here, to make this place your own and create your work from it? And who are you to say that you do so from a place of love, not ambition or pity or arrogance, not from some misplaced need to affirm your position or legitimize your politics?

Dinah Douieb's curator insight, April 17, 7:09 AM
"We Wanted a Revolution" focuses on the work of black women artists during the emergence of second-wave feminism—a primarily white, middle-class movement (Judy Chicago's The Dinner Party might ring a bell). What we forget is that just as Chicago and Miriam Schapiro (co-founders of the Cal Arts Feminist Art Program) opened Womenhouse, a 1972 site-specific work in a Los Angeles house, artists like Betye Saar and Senga Nengudi were also engaging in discussions of black female subjectivity and oppression.
