C'est possible avec les machines high-tech du Fab'Lab Lille. Premier du genre en Nord-Pas-de-Calais, il a ouvert en octobre dernier. Et demain, comme tous les mardis après-midi, c'est gratuit. Seule contrepartie : dévoiler publiquement son projet. « Lancé aux Etats-Unis, le Fab'Lab est basé sur le partage de connaissance, l'émulation et l'apprentissage et l'auto-assistance », explique Charles-Albert De Medeiros, l'ingénieur informaticien de 36 ans à l'initiative du projet. Et le « laboratoire de fabrication » permet bien de fabriquer « à peu près tout et n'importe quoi ».

Ce jeudi, l'université de Cergy-Pontoise inaugure Fac Lab, le premier fab lab en France dans une université. Il sera ouvert au public. Pour ses porteurs, ce type de lieu est une réponse à la crise que nous traversons. Camarade, lève-toi et produis ! Telle pourrait être la devise gravée aux frontons de chaque fab labs. Abrégé de fabrication laboratory, ces mini-usines permettent, en les programmant par ordinateur, de manufacturer à la demande une vaste gamme d’objets. Livres, pompes à eau, stations météo…Chacun peut à une échelle locale concrétiser son projet. Voilà un raisonnement qui change du schéma de production capitaliste, caractérisé par une consommation de masse et des importations de biens parcourant des milliers de kilomètres. Listés par le réputé Massachussets Institute of Technology qui est à l’origine du projet, les fab labs sont aujourd’hui plus de 200 à travers le monde. « Ce sont les connaissances qui doivent bouger, pas les produits », résume Nicolas Lassabe, responsable du fab lab toulousain Artilect.

I rarely do list posts, but occasionally, I stumble upon an interesting topic that I cannot approach any other way. The topic that has been interesting me lately is DIY drones. Political scientist Francis Fukuyama is building one. Patron of guerrillas worldwide, John Robb, is encouraging everybody to build one before the government bans them. Editor of Wired, Chris Anderson, actually has his own drone company. The New York Times is running op-eds about them. Momentum seems to have been building for the last couple of years. Heck, my wife is now insisting that I help her build one.

Robots are always with us, in one form or another. Humans have always been fascinated by robots and even after many years of evolution and high tech ingenuity, a veil of mystery still surrounds them. Within the context of contemporary art we can try to understand the real impact of robots on our society better. Artbots is an international art exhibition for robotic art and art-making robots. The first show took place in 2002 in Brooklyn, and has since travelled around the world. For every edition an open call for applications is published to invite designers from all over the world to present their work. This year the show is organised by timelab Gent, in cooperation with ArtBots US, Ugent and Foam. With Artbots 2011, timelab launches a new season of workshops centered around Robotics Art.
