Transmedia producing

How Does the Film Industry Actually Make Money? | Transmedia producing | Scoop.it

Adam Davidson: "There must be an easier way to make money. For the cost of “Men in Black 3,” for instance, the studio could have become one of the world’s largest venture-capital funds, thereby owning a piece of hundreds of promising start-ups. Instead, it purchased the rights to a piece of intellectual property, paid a fortune for a big star and has no definitive idea why its movie didn’t make a huge profit. Why is anyone in the film industry?" ...

Good Post: Creating a Spark: Official and Fan-Produced Transmedia for The Hunger Games | Antenna

Good Post: Creating a Spark: Official and Fan-Produced Transmedia for The Hunger Games | Antenna | Transmedia producing | Scoop.it

May 11, 2012
By Melanie Kohnen

"The Hunger Games (THG) has become one of Hollywood's biggest success stories of the year. Since the film is based on a successful young adult novel by Suzanne Collins, the cinematic adaptation could count on a built-in audience. In order to mobilize the existing fan base and court new fans, Lionsgate’s marketing department rolled out a campaign that incorporated transmedia storytelling elements. The centerpiece of the campaign is an ARG (Alternate Reality Game) that allows fans to become citizens of Panem. Accessible through the “Citizen Information Terminal,” a website that aggregates content from Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, and Youtube, the ARG mixes diegetic information (such as trends in Capitol fashion) with extradiegetic material (e.g. a link to Fandango, accompanied by a note declaring that “attendance [of the film] is mandatory”).

Transmedia storytelling has become a familiar element of film and television promotion, especially for media properties incorporating fantasy and scifi elements (currently, transmedia campaigns are underway for Prometheus, The Amazing Spider-Man, and The Dark Knight Rises). While many fans readily engage with official promotional material, they also create their own media. Transmedia produced for THG shows how multifaceted and sometimes conflicting interests among fans and marketing departments arise out of shared media platforms and a shared storyworld.

With the widespread use of Twitter and Tumblr, official and fan-produced transmedia increasingly share the same media spaces. Both fans and those who address fans through marketing use these spaces because they make sharing media easy. Indeed, sharing images and videos via reblogging is perhaps Tumblr’s core functionality and defining characteristic. Via reblogging and retweeting, fans spread news about the latest part of a marketing campaign faster and wider than a print ad, poster, or traditional preview could. Most importantly, reblogging turns officially produced transmedia into a personalized message: fans feel they receive an update about THG from a fellow fan, not from a studio’s marketing department. Or at least this is the perception that marketing departments try to create...."

Trion releases Defiance feature video, details 'transmedia' #Storytelling synergy

Trion releases Defiance feature video, details 'transmedia' #Storytelling synergy | Transmedia producing | Scoop.it

Jef Reahard: "Trion has released a new making-of featurette for Defiance, its "transmedia" property that includes a sci-fi shooter MMO and a Syfy television series."

Defiance the game takes place in the bombed out ruins of a post-alien-invasion San Francisco, while Defiance the TV show is set in and around St. Louis, Missouri.

Despite the location differences, Trion says that the events of the virtual world will affect those of the show and vice versa. How so (and how much)? That remains to be seen, but Shacknews has a game preview that sheds a little light on the subject.

Pinterest premieres transmedia storytelling experiment | Daily Dot

Pinterest premieres transmedia storytelling experiment | Daily Dot | Transmedia producing | Scoop.it

Pinterest has already changed the way marketers think about commerce.  But it may also be ushering in a new form of storytelling.  Transmedia company BeActive is using Pinterest to share one work of fiction through a combination of episodic videos, audio snippets, and visual pins.

Beat Girl is part graphic novel, part TV show, and all on Pinterest.  It tells the story of fictional DJ Heather Jennings in a method that’s not quite TV show, not quite in-person character sketch, and not quite graphic novel. With 160 pins and counting, viewers can catch new glimpses of Jennings’ life added daily. The interactive drama is presented as a prequel to an upcoming multi-platform video series.

While the finished product may be a genre of entertainment never seen before, BeActive CEO Nuno Bernardo says it’s rooted in a much older art form.  “We wanted to bring back the popular Photonovels of the ‘60s to the new digital generation,” he said in a statement. “The tools and functionalities introduced by Pinterest allowed us to release the content the way we envisioned. As a world’s first we expect that in the future more and more stories will be told on this network using photos and still images”.

Bernardo told the Daily Dot that although Beat Girl is based on a novel, he found it to be a story uniquely suited for multiple platforms.

The Changing Role of the Medium / Transmedia Really is a Misconception by Christine Weitbrecht

It certainly isn’t news to any of us that the media are changing, and very rapidly at that. The Internet allows us to access any type of medium and any type of content – be it legally or illegally – at any point in time; our media devices are merging into one, so that we no longer have to literally put down our book in order to start a computer game; and to top it all off, the tools of media creation and production not only become increasingly easy to use, but also a lot more affordable...

A theory about Prometheus and the Space Jockeys | Live for Films | Transmedia producing | Scoop.it

Spoilers! I'm bookmarking until I see it..

'I was going to call this post “Why I am done with Ridley Scott.” I thought that was a bit harsh. We will see how it goes from here.
Last night I finally got to see Prometheus. It was in 3D IMAX. The film looked stunning, especially in the first half. It had a great sense of scale and depth showing us just how small mankind really is.
SPOILERS AHEAD:
The story left me feeling a bit “Is that it?” Lots of the characters made stupid decisions:
Surely they would have scanned the place before they went in?
Why would they step in pools of liquid on an alien planet without checking if it was acid?...'

Aaron Sorkin Wants Your Attention

Aaron Sorkin Wants Your Attention | Transmedia producing | Scoop.it

One of America's best storytellers explains what it's like to tell stories in the digital age....

Excerpt:

'Walt: You’re saying your writing hasn’t changed because of digital. What about your life?

Sorkin: I have lots of digital stuff, just like everybody. But “I’m all but computer illiterate, which I’m not proud of.” Mostly I just use my computer to write scripts. But I’m amazed that 3-and-a-half-year-olds can resonate with computers right away. “If I could ask Steve Jobs anything, it would be ‘What’s that magic trick?’”

But storytelling hasn’t really changed that much. The digital age has brought us five-, six-minute stories. That’s really cool. And it’s great that people have these great tools to make movies, like my daughter, who has a laptop and iPhone, and does that all the time.

“I think what we might see is digital filmmaking sort of becoming the new indie film.” But we still have to “distinguish between what’s going to be good and what’s not going to be good.”

There are lots of crappy $100 million movies. But at least when we buy a ticket to that, “we know there was a vetting process.” In journalism, it’s hard to get a job at the New York Times. But you don’t need credentials to start your own digital newspaper. (That’s a good thing, Aaron.)...'
