The History of English in Ten Minutes - OpenLearn - Open University

The History of English in Ten Minutes - OpenLearn - Open University | Articles re. education | Scoop.it
Where did the phrase ‘a wolf in sheep’s clothing’ come from? And when did scientists finally get round to naming sexual body parts? Voiced by Clive Anderson, this entertaining romp through 'The History of English' squeezes 1600 years of history into 10 one-minute bites, uncovering the sources of English words and phrases from Shakespeare and the King James Bible to America and the Internet. Bursting with fascinating facts, the series looks at how English grew from a small tongue into a major global language before reflecting on the future of English in the 21st century.
Alison Rostetter's insight:

These 10, very short videos are an insight into where our English words came from and all are narrated with a very dry, British sense of humour.  As a follow-up to light-hearted learning I could recommend Bill Bryson's excellen book 'Mother Tongue'.  More of the same but with more information.

The EFL SMARTblog: Why do we celebrate Valentine's Day? | Articles re. education | Scoop.it
You are going to. read information in a video about Valentine's Day; do a true or false quiz based on the clip; read an infographic about Valentine;s Day. 1) Discuss. What do you know about Valentine's Day?
Alison Rostetter's insight:

Never know what to do with your students on Valentine's Day, well here's  a nice info video with questions to go with it.  My suggestion for more advanced learners:

Roses are red

Violets are blue..

.................Now you finish the little 4-line rhyme

e.g

Roses are red

Violets are blue

....I think I'm the greatest

And so do you... :-)

......Spending each minute

Thinking of you...

What would you do with a cool million?
Alison Rostetter's insight:

This is a really amusing story but the language level is pretty high, partly due to the fact that it is rather archaic (think Bertie Wooster) and might need toning down/explaining to use in class but definitely a good site for people who deal with money and business.

Probably many scoopit fans know this site, but I stumbled on it while looking for an interesting introduction to Staff Motivation - the next unit in my course book (C1).  There are loads of presentations and I have embedded my choices in a class wiki so I can easily find it and my students can watch it again if they want to.    Great site to browse and the advantage of slides is, that unlike a movie you can stop instantly and discuss without losing the thread as you would in a film.

There are two versions, one in British and one in American English, both searchable within a single CEF level or across levels. In addition, they have audio pronunciation for all entries and are fully searchable by part of speech, grammar, usage, prefix or suffix and topic.
