Blended learning and the flipped classroom

Blended learning and the flipped classroom | Articles re. education | Scoop.it

What exactly do these terms mean? How much online content is the right amount? What sorts of sites and apps should we be using? How can we convincingly recommend new technologies to students who are more technologically savvy than we are? Do we need a radical rethink of the way we present information to learners?

Alison Rostetter's insight:

This is rather cruel and perhaps even racist, but it does underline the fact that the wrong intonation or stress from a speaker can cause a listener to not understand what is being said.

The professor's own English is rather staccato and very refined and reflects the spoken language preferred on radio or film at this time.  I don't think anyone speaks like this anymore, except on old Pathé newsreels.

Nevertheless, it is a good model to hold up in front of students to encourage good sentence stress.

Ultimate Vocabulary Developer Highlights 3 Reasons For Adding This Useful ...
Alison Rostetter's insight:

As a child who read a lot I never had problems with vocabulary but for parents whose children don't read as much as they should this may well be a useful tool.

A good vocabulary for native speakers is vital.  How can you read a business text, for example, if you don't understand half the words or express yourself without repeating the same, tired words.

I have no idea how good this tool is, but it is worth knowing that it exists and could be used to build vocabulary and probably in a more light-hearted and focused way than simply by reading books all the time.  Books are great but maybe this way is faster?

Good language teachers, as seen through the eyes of teachers and ... | Articles re. education | Scoop.it
With this in mind, and with particular reference to the lack of elaboration on the part of the student in question, we decided to conduct research into what Turkish learners regard as good teaching of English.
Alison Rostetter's insight:

Highly interesting.  I include 2 quotes here from the text:

………add teachers’ conception of the good English teacher came about at seeing teachers’ unease about the evaluation forms that students anonymously complete at the end of each semester.

One trait that both groups of learners did place a great deal of importance on was that of the personal qualities of the teacher. Indeed, as with the teacher respondents, this was the regarded as being the most important factor in good teaching.

Well worth reading, and not only relevant to teachers in Turkey.
