Skype - Stereo Mix - YouTube /Play Student CD over Skype

Alison Rostetter's insight:

After hours of asking round and surfing the web I finally discovered how to play a CD recording to a student when teaching via Skype.  Here is one of the videos that helped me on my way.  The thing you need to know first is that you have to 'rip' your CD onto your computer (I used Windows Media Player) and then when you fiddle with your sound settings, it works and you have full control over what is being listened to!

Good luck.  It took me about 10 days to figure it out - perhaps you'll manage in 10 minutes.

Alison Rostetter's insight:

Using the word “grammar”, she said, can conjure off-putting images of an old-fashioned classroom. It makes it sound like a secret you’re not let in on, and has associations of “right” or “wrong”. On the other hand, “understanding” or “knowledge about language” make it sound more positive.   NB: SPaG test is Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation.  Didn't know about that one before!

The Prince of Wales is absolutely right – bring back grammar schools

It was a stormy graduation day in Cambridge on Saturday. Drenched with rain, the students in their gowns looked like penguins emerging from the sea.
Alison Rostetter's insight:

I don't live in Britain any more, but I do try to keep up with life over there and it seems to me that this article is talking a lot of sense.  I went to a Grammar school and I suspect, had I had to attend a comprehensive school I would not be the person I am today.  Grammar school was tough, but we learned and we learned in a very competetive environment that is missing today.

How To Improve Immigrants' English (1940s Instructional Film) [HD] - YouTube

How To Improve Immigrants' English (1940s Instructional Film) [HD]. Originally called '48 Paddington Street', British Pathe issued this as a cinema newsreel ...
Alison Rostetter's insight:

This is rather cruel and perhaps even racist, but it does underline the fact that the wrong intonation or stress from a speaker can cause a listener to not understand what is being said.

The professor's own English is rather staccato and very refined and reflects the spoken language preferred on radio or film at this time.  I don't think anyone speaks like this anymore, except on old Pathé newsreels.

Nevertheless, it is a good model to hold up in front of students to encourage good sentence stress.
