English Vocabulary Profile

English Vocabulary Profile | Articles re. education | Scoop.it
Welcome to English Profile -- setting industry standards for English language learners. Linked to the Common European Framework for Reference for Languages (CEFR), English Profile will provide a detailed set of Reference Level Descriptions for English language learners.
Alison Rostetter's insight:

The English Vocabulary Profile tells us which words (and which meanings of words), and phrases learners typically know and can use at each level of the CEFR. There are two versions, one in British and one in American English, both searchable within a single CEF level or across levels. In addition, they have audio pronunciation for all entries and are fully searchable by part of speech, grammar, usage, prefix or suffix and topic.

Knowing German Makes Learning English Easier - Laboratory Equipment

Knowing German Makes Learning English Easier - Laboratory Equipment | Articles re. education | Scoop.it
A study found that anyone who reads and writes German well is likely to carry over this advantage to English– regardless of the age of onset of foreign language learning or the biological age.
Alison Rostetter's insight:

This is very interesting because I live in Switzerland and there are currently huge debates about which language Swiss kids should be learning (Switzerland has 4 national languages to choose from) and then how early they should be learning.  It would seem after reading this, that the kids can afford to wait a bit and not have several languages at an early age.  I quote from the text:

As the results showed, foreign language lessons at an early age did not have a beneficial impact either in the long or in the short term. Already after six months learners who had started five years later had caught up with the early learners and sometimes even surpassed them, e.g. in terms of morpho-syntactic accuracy and complexity, syntactic fluency, grammaticality judgment and content-related and structural aspects of written expression. However, the early learners had a larger vocabulary at the first measurement and less of a tendency to fill the gaps in their vocabulary in the foreign language with so-called “code-switching” into German. “By the second assessment, shortly before the final high-school exams, there were no longer any differences between early and late starters,” says Pfenninger.

Strange English signs in China and Japan really hate vegetables, sometimes ... - RocketNews24 | Articles re. education | Scoop.it
We’ve talked before about some of the reasons why bizarre English signage pops up in Asia. One of the most common causes is a fundamental difference in the way sentences are structured between English and other languages.
Alison Rostetter's insight:

A little learning can be a dangerous thing.  I love showing these kind of signs to students to see if a) they understand what was meant and b) if they can smarten the language  up a bit
