Companion screens could impact the advertising-based television model in two ways. On the downside, as an ad displays on the primary TV screen, the viewer turns away to the smart phone or tablet. The potential upside comes from supplementing the first screen with related content on the second.

Two main technics are used to sync the content for ad insertion : Automated Content Recognition (ACR-Fingerprinting) or Content Information Service (ie metadata inserted along the signal). Both have their benefits and downsides and should coexist in the future.
