A faded billboard advertisement for The Dark Knight movie on an old milk bar in the Melbourne suburb of Preston was the catalyst for the formation of a unique business that specialises in producing commercial murals.

Tyson Hunter, Tristan Minter and Hamish McBride are the team behind Apparition Media, which produces hand-painted murals for its clients.  

They started off in 2014 painting murals for free, but have now painted 100 works. The business has experienced 400 per cent growth in the past 12 months and Apparition, which now has 15 staff, is on track to turn over $2 million this financial year.

To make Discord (the second photo in his Personal Effects series), Prins started by taking apart an obsolete laptop piece by piece. Using almost 4,000 feet of fishing line, he hung every bit from his studio's ceiling, relying on sketches to arrange the bits so they looked as if the machine was exploding.

You might assume that Discord, Rutger Prins’s phenomenally detailed photograph of an exploding laptop, was constructed with software. You might also think the work was about blowing up old machinery. On both counts, you would be wrong... read and watch the VIDEO!!

Is it every appropriate to copy the design of another? Yes. Why do I say this? Because, frankly, as designers we are constantly mimicking what we see in the world around us. We peruse the internet searching for “inspiration” and, as we collect this information, our brain remembers the elements we like and those we dislike. The more time we spend with certain styles of design, the more our design starts to imitate it. Is that a good thing?
