San Jose ICA #Callforartists Sandbox Projects

CALL FOR ARTISTS
San Jose ICA Announces Sandbox Projects

Deadline to Apply: July 6, 2012

The San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) is proud to announce Sandbox Projects, an opportunity for West Coast artists to create and exhibit experimental artworks in the ICA's Focus Gallery. In the Silicon Valley, technologists use the term "sandbox" as a figurative place to experiment with new code or ideas. In a similar spirit, the ICA's Sandbox Projects is a space that supports emerging and mid-career artists to experiment, take risks and develop works that would not otherwise be realized. Open to all media, the program encourages site responsive, ambitious, architectural and large-scale works.

Studiolab is a 3-year Europe-wide initiative that merges the artist's studio with the research lab. | Art, Technology, Innovation | Scoop.it

Through a synergistic network, Studiolab is inspiring new approaches to environmental, technological and social challenges and providing a template for innovative art science collaborations. Studiolab involves interaction between 13 leading centres of scientific research, artistic excellence and experimental design accross 12 European countries.

These partners are collaborating and working with world leading scientists, artists, and designers to pilot projects using integrated processes of incubation, education and public engagement. Incubation actions develop and strengthen ideas, bringing them from concepts to outcomes. Educational modules tackle the lack of opportunities for interdisciplinary learning and an art-science approach within second and third level formal education systems. Public engagement activities catalyse open collaboration and give insight into the scientific process through exhibitions, events and workshops.

Studiolab's hybrid projects focus on three main themes at the frontiers of science, the Future of Water, Synthetic Biology, and the Future of Social Interaction. Across these three themes and three strands, Studiolab partners are developing products and activities with educational, social, cultural, or commercial value as well as a unique programme of activities which promote science and creativity among Europe's citizens.

LCD Ribbon Sculpture | Hypersonic Engineering & Design

LCD Ribbon Sculpture | Hypersonic Engineering & Design | Art, Technology, Innovation | Scoop.it
Patterned by Nature was commissioned by the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences for the newly built Nature Research Center in Raleigh, North Carolina.

The artwork, a collaboration between Hypersonic Engineering & Design, Plebian Design, and Sosolimited, celebrates our abstraction of nature's infinite complexity into patterns through the scientific process, and through our perceptions. It brings to light the similarity of patterns in our universe, across all scales of space and time.

10 feet wide and 90 feet in length, this sculptural ribbon winds through the five story atrium of the museum and is made of 3600 tiles of LCD glass. It runs on roughly 75 watts, less power than a laptop computer. Animations are created by independently varying the transparency of each piece of glass.

The content cycles through twenty programs, ranging from clouds to rain drops to colonies of bacteria to flocking birds to geese to cuttlefish skin to pulsating black holes. The animations were created through a combination of algorithmic software modeling of natural phenomena and compositing of actual footage.

An eight channel soundtrack accompanies the animations on the ribbon, giving visitors clues to the identity of the pixelated movements. In addition, two screens show high resolution imagery and text revealing the content on the ribbon at any moment.
