My White Trash Family by Kim Alsbrooks

My White Trash Family by Kim Alsbrooks | Art, photography, design, tech, culture & fashion | Scoop.it

The White Trash Series was developed while living in the South out of frustration with some of the prevailing ideologies, in particular, class distinction. This ideology seemed based on a combination of myth, biased history and bizarre sentimentality obout old wars and social structures. With the juxtaposition of the portraits from museums, once painted on ivory, now on flattened trash of beer cans and fast food, the artist sets to even the playing field, challenging the perception of the social elite in todays society.

Foley Sounds

Foley Sounds | Art, photography, design, tech, culture & fashion | Scoop.it

The Oakland Museum of California was creating an interactive foley exhibit to teach users how sound effects were created for films. They play an old noir film and a western and have a series of 8 sound stations set up. The user watches each film and record the sounds while the movie is playing.

I was hired to illustrate each sound effect to clarify the sound each contraption made. During testing, many users were lost as to what to do and these instructional illustrations guided users to a sound-tastic experience.

The challenge of illustrating sounds in a fun and informative way was a really engaging exercise. It has sparked an interest in further exploration of sounds and their relationship to color.

Tooth for and Eye: A Chorography Of Violence

Tooth for and Eye: A Chorography Of Violence | Art, photography, design, tech, culture & fashion | Scoop.it

The city of New Orleans is a topographical/ architectural/material/cultural phenomenon with a diverse population participating in raucously colorful and fascinating pursuits and rituals. Homicide is a cultural fact of the life in the city as well. In her second book, Tooth for an Eye: A Chorography of Violence in Orleans Parish, Deborah Luster explores the city in a new way, creating a compelling portrait in the form of a photographic archive of contemporary and historic homicide sites. Following on from her first book, Prisoners of Louisiana, Tooth for an Eye explores the themes of loss and remembrance in a series of tondo photographs that offer an opportunity for the viewer to enter deeper into the idea of the city, a place where life and death coexist, neither free of the other’s infuence.
