I am currently reading a monster of a book. At 802 pages, Steven Pinker’s Better Angels of Our Nature, leaves even a voracious reader like myself a little winded. Pinker’s argument is that the world has become less and less violent over time, so much so that we now live in what is the most peaceful period of human history ever.
We think of our mobile phones as tools. They are products designed to enhance our communication as well as to entertain us with their games and other fun features. They’re functional and sometimes they’re fun … but could they also be a form of art? A number of artists around the globe have certainly thought so. They have created photography, sculptures and mixed media collages with the mobile phone as the center of the piece. Take a look at the following 12 images and see if they get you thinking about your phone in a new kind of light:

Stelarc is a performance artist who has visually probed and acoustically amplified his body. He has made three films of the inside of his body. Between 1976-1988 he completed 25 body suspension performances with hooks into the skin. He has used medical instruments, prosthetics, robotics, Virtual Reality systems, the Internet and biotechnology to explore alternate, intimate and involuntary interfaces with the body.
