Jody Xiong: « Green Pedestrian Crossing », 2012

Jody Xiong: « Green Pedestrian Crossing », 2012 | Art Installations, Sculpture, Contemporary Art | Scoop.it

Jody Xiong of DDB China in conjunction with the China Environmental Protection Foundation created this wonderful outdoor campaign to create a subtle visual reminder of the environmental benefits of walking versus driving. Enormous white canvases with a bare tree were placed across 132 crosswalks in 15 Chinese cities.
As pedestrians crossed their shoe soles were imprinted with a small amount of green paint, leaving behind a trail of leaf-like footprints.
As a result, every step (literally) made the tree go greener.
This inspiring campaign was designed to promote environmentally-friendly decisions, such as walking instead of driving. It was estimated to have involved almost 4 million people, creating 132 trees on the crossings.
After the campaign, the print was exhibited at the Shanghai Zheng Da Art Museum.

Konstantin Dimopoulos: Blue Trees

Konstantin Dimopoulos: Blue Trees | Art Installations, Sculpture, Contemporary Art | Scoop.it

Konstantin Dimopoulos: Blue trees, Burke-Gilman Regional Trail, Kenmore, Washington State, USA

"The Blue Trees is a social art action. Through colour I am making a personal statement about the spirituality of trees and their importance to our very survival: trees are the lungs of the planet.

Colour is a powerful stimulant, a means of altering perception and defining space and time. The fact that blue is a colour that is not naturally identified with trees suggests to the viewer that something unusual, something out of the ordinary has happened. It becomes a magical transformation.

In nature colour is used both as a defensive mechanism, a means of protection, and as a mechanism to attract. The Blue Trees attempts to waken a similar response from viewers. It is within this context that the blue denotes sacredness, something reverential.

Trees are largely invisible in our daily lives, and it’s not until it’s too late that we realise how important they are to us both aesthetically and environmentally. Each year an area at least the size of Belgium of native forests is cleared from around the planet.

Yet while we do this we look at whether other planets can be inhabited, so we’ve got somewhere else to go once we’ve destroyed our own.

The colour used on the trees is biologically safe pigmented water. As an ephemeral artwork, the colour will naturally degrade and the trees gradually revert to their natural state." K.D.

Luzinterruptus: Radioactive Control

Luzinterruptus: Radioactive Control | Art Installations, Sculpture, Contemporary Art | Scoop.it

Radioactive Control is an outdoor installation by spanish collective Luzinterruptus which addresses in a humorous tone, the paranoia we are suffering from the escape of radioactive material in japan, bringing into question the safety systems of nuclear power plants. The project features an army of 100 mysteriously illuminated radioactive figures that seem to advance threateningly in the natural environment in which they are positioned. The intention of the piece was to invite reflection regarding the use and abuse of nuclear energy.

Steven Siegel: "Bridge 2", 2009, Arte Sella, Italy paper

Steven Siegel makes great accumulationas from small elements of a single material by elaborately stacking and layering them into monolithic forms that resemble vessles or geological structures. The materials he uses are discarded newspapers, auto parts, tire rubber, cans, and bags all reconstituted into form and art.
