Maya Lin's Three Ways of Looking at the Earth at the Pace Wildenstein gallery hosted three of the artist's conceptual, systematic explorations of landscapes. The artist, known for monumental and earthworks, created landscapes that would transform viewers’ perspectives about the land and the sea by inviting them to navigate around, through and under these site-related installations. In 2x4 Landscape, Lin used 50,000 individually cut pieces of wood to create a pixelated landscape, reminiscent of architecture. Maya Lin’s work aims to reveal something new and startling about the planet we inhabit. The artist also hopes to bring attention to the physical relationship we have with the natural environment.

Mark Jenkins makes human body casts out of saran wrap and packing tape. He then places them around the city for a variety of humorous and thought provoking effects. In addition to creating art, he also teaches his sculpture techniques through workshops in cities he visits. He currently lives in Washington, DC. Jenkins’ practice of street art is to use the “street as a stage” where passersby become actors. Many of his installations have resulted in intervention by the authorities whom he also regards as actors. Most of his early outdoor works were non-commissioned.

architect Philip Beesley: "Sargasso", Luminato Festival, 2011, Toronto, Brookfield Place
“Sargasso” is a vast canopy consisting of tens of thousands of lightweight, digitally-fabricated components which form an interconnected network of metal, acrylic, and mylar elements. Sargasso slowly shifts and floats above the pedestrian traffic, while shaping the nature of the environment itself.

In 2009 Parco has commissioned the internationally-known Japanese light installation artist Masaru Ozaki to create a Christmas tree installation in front of the Parco #1 building. Like many of Masaru Ozaki’s other works, the Shibuya Christmas trees feature light projections onto surfaces to make those surfaces appear to come to life. In this case, the surfaces on which the light show is projected onto are white cubes of various sizes stacked into the shape of a Christmas tree forest.

Tim Noble & Sue Webster: "Dirty White Trash (with Gulls)", 1998
Artistic duo Tim Noble and Sue Webster are known for their creative experiments, which often utilize waste materials and light projectors. The “trash” used is often rubbish they collect on the streets of London. Sans projector, the artwork above appears to be just a mess of paper bags and wrappers, but once a light is shone—at just the right angle—onto the heap of garbage, out comes a clearly outlined and detailed image reflected onto a solid-colored backdrop.

Chris Burden created Urban Light in 2008 from 202 restored cast iron antique street lamps. For the artist, the street lights symbolize a civilized, sophisticated city that was safe after dark and beautiful to look at. The lights are powered by solar energy and are on every night from dusk until dawn. The individual lights were collected from various resources, including the Rose Bowl flea market. The lamps were all painted a neutral gray in order to draw attention to their individual details and maintain a cohesive installation. At first glance, the lamps appear to be in a perfect grid, however. depending on where the viewer stands, the lamps arrange themselves in different angles.
The work has made appearances in Hollywood films, commercials, and photo shoots and is quickly becoming a must see for Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
