Looking for Lawns : Feature Articles

Move over, corn. According to a satellite-based estimate, lawns constitute the largest area of irrigated crops in America.
Mandee Michelle's insight:

Water is a hot commodity in the Las Vegas Desert. However for years people have been trying to live the american dream by planting lawns. Only in the last few decades has the southwest region of the united states become more contentious of the effect planting a lawn has on the environment. Check out this article for more information and look at this link to see what artist Harriete Estel Berman did to expose this issue.

Mandee Michelle's insight:

Rafael Rozendaal exemplifies what it is to be an artist in the 21st century. Showing this clip to students will show them that art can be so much more then a painting or drawing. I often have students who I think are really creative but they think because they can't draw that it doesn't matter. Showing this clip might help them to see that their are other ways to express creativity and create art.

Mandee Michelle's insight:

This article explains a little more but ... basically Okay-Go used a Rube Goldberg Machine in their music video for This Too Shall Pass. It's interesting to watch and it shows students that art can be interactive and displayed in different ways. This piece would not work hanging on the wall in a museum but it works on you tube.  http://www.mtv.com/news/1633096/ok-go-take-you-behind-eye-popping-this-too-shall-pass-video/

Mandee Michelle's insight:

This clip is a shout-out to my undergrad. Students at UNLV designed a net zero home . I think this is a great clip to share with students because it shows them how creative thinking can help change the future and make the world a better place to live in. Though this clip talks about a home design for the southwest, there are other clips and designers who create plans for their communities. For example Katrina Cottages were designed as a reaction to the problem of FEMA trailers becoming long term housing.

Changing education paradigms

Changing education paradigms | Globalization | Scoop.it
In this talk from RSA Animate, Sir Ken Robinson lays out the link between 3 troubling trends: rising drop-out rates, schools' dwindling stake in the arts, and ADHD. An important, timely talk for parents and teachers.
Mandee Michelle's insight:

The first contemporary art practice that popped into my mind that I believe have revolutionized the way art is now seen is the animation series produced by RSA.

Even though there isn’t an individual artist to attribute credit for these clips to, they show a creative art form and utilize social media to share contemporary ideas. You can find them on you tube or the RSA website and in about a hundred different locations. In some way they remind me of digital zines.

ERIC - Art Education and Visual Culture in the Age of Globalization, Art Education, 2004-Sep

|The term globalization has come into popular use in many areas of discourse. For the most part, it refers to the development of global financial markets, the growth of transnational corporations, and their increasing domination over national and local economies. As the authors use the term in this article, the meaning and significance of globalization can be extended far beyond marketplace and economic conditions to include how they think about virtually all areas of human exchange in their lives, including visual culture and art education. Globalization is not a clearly defined "thing." Globalization cannot be measured completely nor can it be turned fully on or off. For some, globalization "is what we are bound to do if we wish to be happy; for others globalization is the intractable fate of the world, an irreversible process" (Bauman, 1998, p. 1). In this sense, globalization is defined and engaged at any given moment through its construction and context within specific
