Makers on makers: Sahara Dalley of PapaTotoro on The Cray by William Morris | Tate | Art - Craft - Design- Net | Scoop.it

The Paradise Room in the Pre-Rapaelite exhibition houses an incredibly imposing and dramatic piece – a ceiling to floor length block printed textile panel; The Cray one of Morris' last designs produced at Merton Abbey from 1884. A resplendent and complex floral repeat, featuring large scale lush blooms reminiscent of peonies set within an intricate background of intertwined foliage and stems.

This ornate piece incorporates the most beautiful palette of pinks, corals and greens with detail in black and yellow and there is almost a hand painted quality to the dyes upon the fabric.

Check out this amazing animation...how deep can you go inside a painting?

Promotional video for the relaunch of the Google Art Project, the world’s largest digital art gallery.
Our concept was to combine what we considered to be the two most interesting aspects of the Google Art Project: the immersive nature of the experience and the seemingly infinite-zoom into the paintings and the world of art.

Got writer’s block or just want to finish something? Try this. It can become addictive.

Below are a few Five Sentence Fiction pieces that I penned. Who knew I had another voice running around inside of me? I did, but this one seems a little more sentimental and melancholy.

Why Are Mobile Ads So Cheap?

Why Are Mobile Ads So Cheap? | Art - Craft - Design- Net | Scoop.it
Mobile may be the future, but right now, mobile ad units still command a lower price point on average than print and web advertisements. Here's why.

Earlier this year, the renowned venture capitalist and former Wall Street analyst Mary Meeker gave her much-watched annual presentation on Internet trends, during which she revealed a startling statistic based on her own research: The effective cost per thousand impressions (CPM) for desktop web ads is about $3.50, while the CPM for mobile ads is just $0.75.

More recently, leading mobile ad platform Opera Software broke down the average cost for mobile ads by device, and found that even the iPhone, which has the highest average CPM for mobile ads of any smartphone, at $2.85, still falls short of that CPM for web ads on a desktop. Importantly, Opera’s mobile ad estimates likely skew higher because its business focuses on mobile display ads rather than mobile search ads, which tend to have a much lower CPM.

Print ads, by comparison, can command rates of as much as $100 per thousand impressions.

The Beginner’s Guide to CSS

The Beginner’s Guide to CSS | Art - Craft - Design- Net | Scoop.it

Congratulations! All that time you’ve spent coaxing your HTML to transform your blank, white and Times New Roman font-filled web page to something that vaguely represents a design-worthy website is about to become completely and totally moot.

Delete all those <font face= "Comic Sans MS"> tags peppered at the beginning of each of your paragraphs and prepare to get excited: all of your design elements will be in a tidy and simple document.

The beauty of Cascading Style Sheets, or CSS, is that it makes implementing design-work onto a website super-simple. Where traditional style manipulations with HTML would lead to sifting through the code of multiple web pages to keep everything consistent, CSS makes sweeping transformations across every corner of a website.

Say that you want your navigation bar to highlight green when you hover over it. In HTML, that would be a complete and total pain, and cause hours of hair-tearing frustration for a programming beginner. But, in CSS, just two simple lines of code need to be in place for your website to have all the green hovers it needs. Sounds like some sort of wizardry, but trust me: CSS is one of the most versatile and important languages to know — and with it, you’ll be able to personalize your website to your picky specifications.

3D Printing, Copyright Nightmare or DIY Heaven?

3D Printing, Copyright Nightmare or DIY Heaven? | Art - Craft - Design- Net | Scoop.it

LONDON, United Kingdom — Remember Maison Martin Margiela’s L’Incognito sunglasses from 2008? Of course you do. A futuristic strip of dark polycarbonate that wrapped around the wearer’s eyes like an identity-obscuring black bar, they were an instant sell-out and are now sought-after collectibles. I missed my chance to buy them and I’ve regretted it ever since. Everyone has their version of this story, from the limited-edition Nikes that got away to a coveted vintage bracelet that’s now impossible to find. But in a fast-approaching future, you may be able to simply download a design file, the same way you might download an mp3, and ‘3D print’ all the products you want.

‘Rapid manufacturing’ may be a more accurate name for this instant production process, but with a PC, the right software and a 3D printer, it’s now possible to produce your very own sunglasses, jewellery or bikini. Within hours. From your kitchen table.

How Google Could Lose Its Grip on Mobile Search

How Google Could Lose Its Grip on Mobile Search | Art - Craft - Design- Net | Scoop.it
While Google has a lock on search at the moment, there are a few scenarios in which Google could lose its substantial lead.

If you think Googlehas a commanding lead in the traditional search advertising market, you should check out how the company’s doing in mobile search.Last year, 91% of the global market for mobile search went to Google, according to IDC. What’s more, while search is 47% of the desktop ad market, it comprises 70% of the mobile ad market. “What’s interesting is that number has gone up, not down,” says Karsten Weide, program VP, media and entertainment for IDC. “We thought it would normalize, but that’s not what’s happened.”

While Weide expects search to approach desktop levels within a few years, for the foreseeable future, mobile advertising will primarily be about search — and search will be controlled by Google.

Why? Odds are your smartphone comes with Google as its default search engine. In the third quarter, Google’s Android and Apple‘s iOS comprised 85% of the smartphone market, according to IDC. Both use Google.

Social Media Monitoring Across Industries [INFOGRAPHIC]

Social Media Monitoring Across Industries [INFOGRAPHIC] | Art - Craft - Design- Net | Scoop.it

Twitter has over 170 million active users, Facebook claims to have 950 million people using the service in a given month and even Google+ now boasts 100 million active users.

With these huge numbers of people worldwide using social networks to share news, sentiment, and thoughts every single day, there is a huge potential to use social media to monitor political sentiment, the stock market, public health and more. In fact, research shows that analysis of public mood can sometimes reflect the Dow Jones, can help predict political polling data and can even quickly pinpoint epidemics and flu outbreaks.

Take a look at how the extensive amount of data gleaned from social media can be used as an effective monitoring tool across industries and for different purposes in the infographic..
