Valinda Carroll's insight:

While not specifically about art conservation, STEAM can include art conservation topics. I am excited about the recent STEAM initiatives at RISD and other places where they are trying to show the need for art in the curriculum.

“Direct care” and Conservation

Valinda Carroll's curator insight, March 16, 9:07 AM

This can easily represent a slippery slope. Museums should be encouraged to include conservation, at least general preservation activities, within their general operating budgets. I'm uncomfortable ethics of subsidizing collection care with the proceeds of deaccessioned collections. This issue arose in connection with a grant proposal where I was a reviewer (deaccessioning to raise a "match" for cost-sharing). The AAMD stance was taken into consideration, and I know that it lowered my "score" for that applicant.

Valinda Carroll's insight:

This is great information on the work being done at LC. Between the proprietary software with licensing restrictions, and the changes in playback equipment/hardware, video game preservation is a very challenging field. Even with emulation software, the experience will probably be pretty far removed from the original format.

Why museums hide masterpieces away

Why museums hide masterpieces away | Art Conservation Education and Outreach | Scoop.it
In major museums around the world, great works of art are hidden away from public view. What are they – and why can’t we see them? Kimberly Bradley finds out.
Valinda Carroll's insight:

This is an area where museums have not communicated effectively with the public. With the exception of this BBC story, the fact that only 5% of a collection might be on exhibit is presented as a bad thing (in the media), when it needs to be explained in terms of collections stewardship. If your mission is to keep things "forever," then you can't leave everything on exhibit all of the time.
