The local artist behind the "Surfing Madonna" mosaic in Encinitas comes forward.

Artist Mark Patterson created a rogue mosaic "Surfing Madonna" as a gift for the city of Encinitas. He never meant for his identity to be known, and while the mosaic was removed and has been displayed in a few locations, it now lives across the street from its original location with a "Surfing Madonna" non-profit that raises money to support the arts in the community. What a gift.

Artist Jim Bachor creates mosaics to cover the potholes of Chicago. He uses the flag of Chicago and fake serial numbers (a joke regarding the numerous potholes) in his simple mosaics, and says he is inspired by Italian mosaics and their sense of craftsmanship and permanence.

Mosaic graffiti artist known as Invader uses mosaics to depict pixelated images of "primitive" video games as a commentary on the digital technology that invades our world: 

"It was symbolic of the new world of technology and now we are being invaded by digital technology," he said. "It's just a little square, but when you put them together, it can create many things."

Artist Motoi Yamamoto uses salt to create mazes and landscapes that helped him through the grief of losing his sister to brain cancer. Salt, a traditional symbol for purification and mourning in Japanese culture, is used in funeral rituals and even placed in small piles at the entrance to restaurants and other businesses to ward off evil spirits and to attract benevolent ones.

The building colors and patterns change as data mining looks for trends in the social media of China. The ability to marry technology with emotion in such a visually impacting way is stunning.
