Basic Income Alternatives Reconsidered | BIEN

The debate and protests over the importance of an unconditional basic income policy for our time have been spreading worldwide and gathering momentum. Here in Brazil we keep an open ear due to the success of conditional transfer policies (The Bolsa Família program) and also because we have a moot 2004 law that says that such universal and unconditional money

Evil at work.

The principles of "you don't get anything from the government if you don't work" and full employment are bound to be very popular nowadays, but one would be very disappointed upon seeing it in practice: It costs an immense amount of money for the government to employ people to stand on the street holding brooms in full time, which results in those people being stuck in this position and never reentering the job market, the number of "public workers" constantly growing. The whole thing is an economical disaster, although it is suitable for fulfilling its only true purpose: to make Hungarians feel good about themselves that they are not giving away money to "lazy gypsies living large on welfare" (that's the true horror image that terrifies an average Hungarian, not high deficit or unsustainable programs), reinforcing their moral conviction that if money is to be given to somebody, he/she has to work for it first (even if that work produces no value and makes it much more difficult for said person to find a job that does).

Based on the low tax rates that Orban described in the video, you might wonder how the government pays for costly government programs (such as the one mentioned above) and social services in general. Well, Orban did not mention that Hungary has the highest VAT rates in the world. VAT is also known to be a more serious burden on the poor, while letting the rich off the hook. This combined with the things Orban brags about (flat tax, no inheritance tax) provides for a tax system that I think even the more relentless fiscal conservatives in Western Europe would not consider perfectly just.
