In order to feel engaged students need some prior understanding or knowledge of the material, an environment that fosters questions and investigations, the ability to work in a group or collaborative setting, offering multiple choices so students can be self-directed, independent thinking, games, drama and humor.

using other mediums like technology to master scientific principles can give students more time to reflect on important concepts, without wasting time and resources on a poorly developed lab.

The Salon is a great idea. It can be hosted in the Food for Thought Cafe. Monthly discussions on broad topics. We can bring in faculty and community people who have experience with the topic. One such topic: Community building.
