The ambitious project to create a virtual Earth

The ambitious project to create a virtual Earth | areality | Scoop.it

On this week's Futureproof, Jonathan spoke with computer scientist and social scientist Suzy Moat about FuturICT, a project competing for a €1 billion European research grant. In 2010, the European Commission put out a call for computing ideas whose impact would be on par with the moon landing or the mapping of the human genome.

6 projects that would change the way we think about the world shortlisted for further development, and the winner will be announced at the end of this month. FuturICT is one of these 6 projects, and it plans to map all of the different connections in our world and society in real-time - essentially a mega version of The Simms that we could use to virtually test real-world scenarios like climate change, economical collapse, or political shifts.

Close Encounters of the Biomimetic Kind, Wilderness Festival, August 2012

On August 12 2012 Design Scientist and Futurist Melissa Sterry hosted a Biomimicry workshop titled 'Close Encounters of the Biomimetic Kind' in the Natures tent at the Wilderness Festival, which took place at Cornbury Park, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom. Supported by a biologist and facilitators from her team at Earth 2 Hub, Sterry guided participants through the principles of Biomimetic Design, Technology and Engineering, working through an exercise designed to endow them with the knowledge and skills they need to explore this exciting emergent discipline for themselves. Ideas generated from the workshop included smart biomimetic chemistry and materials concepts, with a particular focus on building envelopes.

Interesting use of Augmented Reality and Direct Marketing

RAPP LA recently won the ThinkLA Interactive Award for Best Use of Mobile Media at the Interactive Awards Gala, held in June. RAPP LA took top honors for their work on the 2012 Toyota Camry launch direct mail, beating out fellow nominees 72andSunny and Initiative.

The launch of the 2012 Camry was one of Toyota Motors' biggest, most important vehicle launches in the last decade. Totally redesigned to fit a driver's 21st century life, the Camry introduced new technology that connects drivers not only to the road, but the world around them. The creative resulted in a first-of-its-kind, smartphone-enabled experience that redefined the notion of direct. What was a traditional two-dimensional direct mail piece became an interactive, immersive experience that brought each page to life.

Anything connected to the internet. Futurist's Cheat Sheet: Internet of Things

Anything connected to the internet. Futurist's Cheat Sheet: Internet of Things | areality | Scoop.it
Through the Internet, humans have connected the world. People are closer to each other than ever while still remaining apart. The next phase of the the Internet will be about connecting things.hink of a thing. Really, it could be anything. A chair, a toaster, parts of a car, the lights in your house, the electricity meter, the security cameras in your offices, a fire hydrant, traffic lights … really, anything or everything that can exist could be connected to the Internet. Another name for the Internet of Things is a network of things. The network can monitor your home, your car, infrastructure (utilities such as electricity or water), traffic patterns and a variety of other possibilities to create a more informed and responsive system through data analysis.

Yes! Cinematic Gaming in Cinemas! Birmingham Giant Screen to stage Britain's biggest computer game

Yes! Cinematic Gaming in Cinemas! Birmingham Giant Screen to stage Britain's biggest computer game | areality | Scoop.it
The Giant Screen Cinema, at the city’s Millennium Point science park, will host the larger than life event this Tuesday, and believe that it could be the first of many to come to town.
Gamers of all ages will be invited to form teams and shifting alliances as they battle an alien menace from beyond the stars. At stake could be the very survival of Planet Earth itself. The game is called [Renga] and its creators describe it as “an interactive, cinematic game that mixes new technology, adventure and a wry sense of humour to turn the traditional hero’s journey on its head.
“Ambushed and left for dead in deep space, the audience must work together to rebuild their ship and return home,” they say.
“While fighting off satellite warships, harvesting asteroids and constructing defences, the audience must build consensus on a ship fraught with politics – and that’s before confrontation with the alien mothership.”

Presented by wallFour, a new live event gaming company based at Birmingham Science Park, the action will be played out on the cinema’s giant digital screen, which is 95ft tall and 72ft wide.
