Joe Robertson: One slice of education’s future — the end of the big, bad test | Are you a Global Citizen? | Scoop.it
Education technologists at Kansas City’s Gigabit Summit spark a lot of futuristic thought. A coming test revolution is just one idea, though watch out for the politics.
Halina Ostańkowicz-Bazan's insight:

The climax of a classroom experience becomes not a year-end test and all the attendant cramming, but a multimedia project, or the creation of a theory, or a group social justice action.

This is going to happen.

Bill Gates Is Revolutionizing How History Is Taught, And We Went To A Poor ... - Business Insider | Are you a Global Citizen? | Scoop.it
Big History tells the ultimate origin story.
Halina Ostańkowicz-Bazan's insight:

Like Gates, Henstrand stumbled upon Big History. He saw David Christian's TED Talk, thought it was pretty neat, and decided to show it in the biology class where he was substitute-teaching the following day.

The students went wild for it. There were no dates, battles, or names to memorize. It was a story about the human experience, seen through multiple lenses.

With their prompting, Henstrand approached Big History about bringing the course to BCS. At the time, the class was in its pilot phase, being used and fine-tuned by just seven teachers. Henstrand entered at the next wave of implementation, with 60 teachers.

Folha de S.Paulo - Internacional - En - Culture - Brazilians Succeed Abroad with "Diversity" in Design - 13/06/2014 | Are you a Global Citizen? | Scoop.it
More than 20 years after releasing the "Favela", a chair from the Campana Brothers made with wooden slats, this piece is still the most important reference in design around the world now made in Brazil. Only this time, it is not the only one.
Halina Ostańkowicz-Bazan's insight:

"If you had to summarize the Brazilian design in two words, I would say that is warm and informal. But what attracts me the most is the diversity that our vast territory and our miscegenation offer us," said the Rio resident, who produces for the Italian Cappellini.

Mexico boasts a staggering genetic diversity, study shows | Are you a Global Citizen? | Scoop.it
Writers, artists and historians have long pondered what it means to be Mexican. Now science has offered its answer, and it could change how medicine uses racial and ethnic categories to assess disease risk, testing and treatment.
Halina Ostańkowicz-Bazan's insight:

To illustrate their point, the researchers compared their new genetic data with the results of lung function tests for children in Mexico City and Latinos in the San Francisco Bay Area. They discovered that pulmonary function varied in ways that were mirrored in DNA. It was as if someone with a fraction of Maya ancestry had lungs that were 10 years older than someone with a bit of northern indigenous heritage.

"However the fact that all 20 of this year's acting contenders are white and that there were no women nominated in the writing or directing categories (with Birdman director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu being the sole person of color nominated for directing accolades), does seem to give Boone Isaacs, who is the Academy's first black president, pause and a drive to push for more diversity within the Academy's ranks. “Personally, I would love to see and look forward to see a greater cultural diversity among all our nominees in all of our categories,” she said."

5 Ways Technology Is Disrupting Education

5 Ways Technology Is Disrupting Education | Are you a Global Citizen? | Scoop.it
We always hear that technology is changing everything. But what exactly are the big ideas that are reshaping how students learn and teachers teach?
Halina Ostańkowicz-Bazan's insight:

As classrooms shift from a teacher-centric model — where all students listen quietly to a lecturing instructor to learn the material — learning more often becomes project-based, and sometimes even game-based. Apps and educational games enable teachers not only to differentiate lessons to each student’s needs, but also to get students to work in teams and complete challenges and assignments together. Open-source learning platforms like Moodle enable teachers to set up courses where students can engage in discussion when they’re away from the classroom.

Last week saw the announcement of proposed education targets following UNESCO’s Global Education Meeting in Muscat, at the same time as the zero draft of Open Working Group recommendations on sustainable development goals was made public.
Halina Ostańkowicz-Bazan's insight:

One of the recognized failures of the current set of Education for All and Millennium Development Goals is insufficient attention to setting targets on the means by which desired outcomes would be achieved. Both the Open Working Group and Global Education Meeting proposals acknowledge the importance of including targets on means of implementation this time around, with some similarities but also wide divergences in how to do so for education.

You can also break up your presentation with question and answer sections, pauses between slides, and props to demonstrate your points. A general rule for timing while speaking is that each slide or video clip should only explain about 15 words – too many words per image will cause audiences to become bored and look away from the screen, too little will jolt them from screen to screen too quickly.

When People Talk, Great Things Happen - Speech | Eurasia Review | Are you a Global Citizen? | Scoop.it
Halina Ostańkowicz-Bazan's insight:

Inter-cultural dialogue has often been defined as an open and respectful exchange of views between individuals and groups belonging to different cultures that would lead to a deeper understanding of the other.

However, while dialogue is critical, it must be followed with carefully developed measures designed to create and preserve a harmonious and inclusive society. A harmonious and inclusive society in turn enables the individual to participate in and to identify himself or herself with the community as a whole. Such identification is a key factor in the prevention of future conflicts and in advancing post-war reconciliation.
