Halina Ostańkowicz-Bazan's insight:

Bedouins are a unique entity in the Middle East.  They have a very distinct culture and identity.  Yet, this culture and identity is ever changing, depending on where they live and external pressures.  With the November 2013 protests of the Prawer-Begin Plan, Bedouins were on the forefront of Israeli and international news.  This podcast focuses on Bedouin identity and culture, with a comparison of Bedouin history in Israel and Jordan.  Yoav Alon, a professor of Middle East History at Tel Aviv University, is featured on this podcast.

Is Immigration Really A “Jewish Value”?
Halina Ostańkowicz-Bazan's insight:

Rather than a universalist ethic, traditional Jewish ethics made strong distinctions in the morality of actions depending on whether Jews or non-Jews were involved. For example, radio personality Dennis Prager describes the results of asking 10 Talmudic scholars about returning an item acquired as the result of an error by a non-Jew:...

Halina Ostańkowicz-Bazan's insight:

Clearly, as in the European Union, these states have different predispositions and priorities, reflecting their endowments and relative strengths. The leadership of Kazakhstan (analogous to the UK’s disposition to the EU) rather favours an economic association, whereas Belarus (similar to Germany) supports a stronger and more comprehensive political and economic union.

THE VIEW FROM FEZ: The Magic Carpet ~ A cross-border "Romeo and Juliet" | Are you a Global Citizen? | Scoop.it
Halina Ostańkowicz-Bazan's insight:

The Magic Carpet is a new work produced by Borderline Theatre Company - a mobile, transnational theatre collective of which I am co-founder and artistic director. We develop new works based on classic stories, myths, legends and oral traditions, and center them around contemporary border conflicts. During my research along the Spanish-Moroccan and Moroccan-Algerian borders, it became clear that the story of star-crossed lovers held particular resonance in this region. Our lives are full of borders, from those that exist between Chicago neighborhoods to the military outposts between Morocco and Algeria. Through storytelling, I aim to uncover and share our common struggles, and our common joys, with people across the world.

Halina Ostańkowicz-Bazan's insight:

We all know that the way we eat, as a society, is incredibly wasteful. For starters, the majority of items in our grocery stores have been flown thousands of miles to reach the shelves. Halina Ostańkowicz-Bazan's insight:

Cultural diversity

The seminar brought some interesting diversity. A young Chinese philosopher professor, Wen Haiming, whose book is published by Cambridge University Press and who presented Confucian philosophy as a guiding principle of the Chinese life even today, started his speech by holding up a book written by an Indian woman poet about China as an essential read. This was a remarkable opening of new cultural discourses between these giant neighbours of Nepal.

The African participants brought fresh discussions about nativity and cultures. Discussions about coloniality and race with a somewhat theatrical way struck me as something new. But the African participants differed about the degree of intensity with which they should look at race and coloniality today. They were critical of the colonial reality as well as the current situations inside their countries. Another feature of the seminar about traditional culture that struck me was the use of the difficult situation prevailing inside the concerned countries, as the persistent referral. An Egyptian novelist’s anxiety about the preservation of his traditional culture was linked to politics, in which process the violence, uprisings and military actions became his referrals.

Halina Ostańkowicz-Bazan's insight:

There are multiple literacies which are included under the term "multiliteracy." The introduction of learning a foreign language in schools was the beginning of the more familiar language multiliteracy. To be able to communicate in more than one language today is vital for those who wish to work, compete and succeed in the corporate world, but knowledge of language alone is no longer sufficient either. There also needs to be an understanding of differences in culture in order to be effective in a globalized world. Cultural literacy necessitates the appreciation of and interaction with other cultures.

The old, grievance-based sovereignty movement is dead. But that doesn't mean a new one won't emerge
Halina Ostańkowicz-Bazan's insight:

Quebec’s national aspirations are as permanent as the Laurentian Shield. They may fall prey to an ice age, see their contour shift and their landscape evolve with the passing of time, but they will remain. Whether we hate it or love it, the idea of an independent country is in our DNA. It will remain the source of arguments at the Christmas table for generations to come.

Harnessing the talent of home-grown immigrants is crucial and that is why there are many Saudis who do not appreciate any discrimination against expatriates
Halina Ostańkowicz-Bazan's insight:

One can only look at the US and its experience with immigration in the early part of the 20th Century, which eventually propelled them to be the greatest nation on earth. We would be better off harnessing the talent and energy of our own aspiring home-grown immigrants. They would certainly contribute to and enrich the social, economic and cultural diversity of the country.

LSU The Reveille
History professor Karl Roider has taught students Western civilization and other advanced history courses for 46 years, and at the end of this semester, he is set to retire.
Halina Ostańkowicz-Bazan's insight:

He wants students to be able to read the newspaper and understand the current events of their time.

“All you have to do is look at the Ukraine. No one knows where or what that is,” Roider said.

History was always a part of his life. He’s seen it happen firsthand, been a part of it and shared it with his students.

His neighbor, a history professor, would tell Roider stories about the material he taught. Visiting his grandfather in northern New York, Roider loved the historical sights of early American battlefields.

“I was fascinated being near the atmosphere,” Roider said.

The material drew him to teaching, but interacting with student is what kept him.

He’s stayed in touch with these students. Some of them have gone on to teach, while others reminisce with him about ways he made their time at the University better.

“I will miss the students the most,” Roider said.

Beyond religious nationalism « The Immanent Frame | Are you a Global Citizen? | Scoop.it
Halina Ostańkowicz-Bazan's insight:

Furthermore, the comparison of the Bosnian, Croatian, Irish, and Polish cases uncovered Christianities that, although constitutive of national identities, provided a critique of the exclusivist and homogenizing drive of national ideologies. In the recent Bosnian war, for example, the Bosnian Franciscans affirmed their Croatian identity, but also condemned and rejected nationalistic agendas that sought to divide Bosnia and Herzegovina between Croats and Serbs. Countering these agendas, the Franciscans spoke of a Bosnian identity that embraced different religious, cultural, and national groups in dialogue with each other. The Bosnian Franciscans thus managed to articulate their national and religious particularities while also subverting the Croatian nationalistic ideology.

The Dark Side of Globalization

The Dark Side of Globalization | Are you a Global Citizen? | Scoop.it
The only way to mitigate the process of globalization is the leveling of the disparity of global power, and the establishment of a new international order
Halina Ostańkowicz-Bazan's insight:

In other words, new scientific language promoted by winners of globalization level the cultural differences and undermine traditional and regional aspects which include, but are not limited to religious, historical, cultural and philosophical features of the world’s peoples. It can also be said that globalization through the exchange of ideas also threatens the institution of the sovereign state. How? Both the independent exchange of ideas and the formal institution of public education is key not just for human development, but for the institutionalization, norm creation, and legitimacy formation of the state. People, as ‘human capital, are developed and utilized by the modern state as any other natural resource at its disposal.[10]. If a government is not involved in the process of public and special education, there are external powers that will act to fill this void. As a result, the human capital potential and stability of any given state will be decreased.
